A police head constable was killed in a terrorist attack in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, while the Union Territory has been under attack at the heart of the nation's security problems.
According to officials, terrorists opened fire at Lal Chowk in Anantnag at around 12:30 pm, targeting the police personnel deployed in the vicinity. The attack left Head Constable Ashiq Hussain, who was on Amarnath Yatra security duty, critically injured, it said.
After this incident, Hussain was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Anantnag for treatment. Doctors tried to save him, but he eventually died of his injuries, they said.
The attack resulted in a quick response from security forces: they immediately cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down the terrorists responsible for the shooting. Additional police and paramilitary forces were deployed in and around the locality to strengthen security and prevent any further incidents.
The number of terrorists involved or the group that carried out the attack is not yet known. The investigation is ongoing, and investigators are looking at CCTV footage from the scene and eyewitness accounts to determine the sequence of events.
As security measures in Jammu and Kashmir are being increased in view of the Amarnath Yatra, one of the country’s largest annual Hindu pilgrimages in the area, thousands of security personnel are deployed in the Union Territory to ensure pilgrims' safety and maintain law and order along the routes of the yatra.
Attacks on security staff during the pilgrimage period are viewed with particular concern as there is a high concentration of people and a more robust surveillance presence across the region. Security forces continue to conduct area domination exercises, intelligence-based operations, and anti-terrorism missions to prevent such attacks.
