From Ancient Wisdom to Global Wellness: President Murmu Hails Ayurveda and Yoga’s Worldwide Rise

President Droupadi Murmu has praised the Central government for its work promoting Ayurveda and Yoga around the world, saying these ancient Indian traditions were gaining international recognition.

India’s traditional systems of healthcare are now integrated into global wellness and not only are they very deep rooted in the country’s rich cultural and medical heritage.

The President told a public event that Ayurveda and Yoga have found their way beyond India’s borders and are now adopted by millions more people in the world. She said these practices are also helping to preserve India’s ancient knowledge and contribute to preventive healthcare and healthier lives and preventive medicine and healthy living.

President Murmu said that the continued support of the government towards the Ministry of AYUSH, research, international collaborations and awareness campaigns has helped India’s traditional healthcare systems in the world. She said Ayurveda and Yoga are a holistic approach to health that emphasizes physical, mental and emotional health, not disease and treatment.

Yoga in general has experienced great global acceptance in the last 10 years. In turn, millions of people from different countries regularly go to mass yoga sessions every year, and on June 21 the United Nations has declared International Day of Yoga as such since India’s proposal.

This annual observance has increased awareness about the health benefits of yoga and has made India a leader in promoting holistic wellness.

In the same way, Ayurveda has become an alternative and complementary healthcare system. In the world, there is growing interest in Ayurvedic therapies, herbal medicines, wellness tourism and preventive medicine. International institutions are also working with Indian institutions to advance education and research and certify Ayurvedic medicine.

President Murmu said that India's traditional knowledge systems are based on scientific principles developed over centuries. She advised educational institutions, researchers and health professionals to continue to conduct evidence-based studies to reinforce the credibility of Ayurveda and Yoga on the global stage.

She also stressed it’s important to integrate traditional healthcare with modern medical practices as necessary. Such a holistic approach to healthcare that supports more comprehensive treatment and so a better lifestyle and preventable illness is possible according to her, she said.

The President hailed doctors, researchers, yoga practitioners and AYUSH professionals for their work in promoting India’s traditional healthcare systems around the world. She said their efforts have helped people in different cultures and countries to gain confidence.

Experts say that the growing awareness worldwide about preventive health, mental health and natural therapies has helped to further accelerate the acceptance of Ayurveda and Yoga. India's growing wellness industry, well-established yoga centres abroad and increasing exports of Ayurvedic products support India's position as a global wellness destination.

President Murmu concluded with a note that Ayurveda and Yoga will continue to inspire healthier societies worldwide and bring India’s wisdom and cultural legacy to the fore.

These traditions are great ambassadors of India’s soft power, she said, and the world has a responsibility to health and well-being.
