Pune Toxic Liquor Tragedy: 15 Dead, Several Hospitalised in Pimpri-Chinchwad

A health tragedy has rocked Maharashtra, as at least 15 people and over 100 others were hospitalised following the consumption of suspected toxic liquor in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad region. The horror had happened in the past 48 hours, causing panic in the area and leading to a police campaign against the illegal liquor network that is believed to be to blame for the deaths.

Several victims were admitted to nearby hospitals after vomiting, blurred vision, breathing difficulties, and unconsciousness soon after drinking the alleged illicit alcohol, authorities said. Many of the victims were daily wage workers and residents from economically weaker backgrounds.

The death toll rose as more critical patients died in treatment, officials said. Doctors in the hospital suspect methanol poisoning, a very dangerous chemical frequently found in illegally manufactured liquor. Some patients still need intensive treatment, and officials are concerned the death toll could rise further.

The tragedy has galvanised Maharashtra citizens and raised questions of how long illegal liquor has been circulating, when they have been arrested by police for sale for decades.

Police Launch Massive Investigation

After the incident, Pune police and excise department officials launched a large-scale investigation into the source of the toxic liquor. Raids were conducted in several locations connected with illegal alcohol distribution networks operating in and around Pimpri-Chinchwad.

An additional six people have been detained for questioning in connection with the case, officials said. Police believe that the liquor might have been manufactured in an illegal setting with hazardous chemicals to boost the liquor’s potency at a low price.

Police officers have said that samples of the seized liquor have been sent for forensic examination to determine the exact composition of the substance consumed by the victims.

But authorities are also trying to find the supply chain of the distribution racket, like suppliers, middlemen and local sellers who provide the toxic alcohol.

Hospitals on High Alert

The government hospitals and emergency medical teams in Pune are now on high alert after the tragedy. There are also several patients being kept under observation, and doctors are monitoring patients' symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Medical experts explained that methanol poisoning can severely damage the nervous system, kidneys and eyesight, and can quickly become fatal if treatment is delayed. Some patients are said to be in critical condition and are being treated in intensive care units.

Family members of the victims gathered outside hospitals in emotional scenes as authorities searched for the dead and tried to help affected families.

Political Reactions and Public Anger

Opposition leaders and social activists have lambasted the government for failing to stop the illegal liquor trade in the region. Residents weathered a series of spurious alcohol outbreaks in different states of India.

Local citizens also demanded stricter enforcement against illicit liquor manufacturing and faster action against those responsible for endangering lives for profit.

State government officials are seeking a detailed report from district authorities about the incident. Compensation for the families of the deceased may also be announced after official verification processes are completed.

And illegal liquor is still a major threat

Toxic liquor incidents continue to pose a public safety concern in some parts of India. Illicit alcohol is often produced using dangerous chemicals and sold cheaply to economically vulnerable sections of society, leading to repeated mass poisoning tragedies over the years.

And researchers say stronger surveillance, public awareness campaigns, and tougher enforcement against illegal brewing operations are crucial to prevent such disasters in the future.

As investigators continue to probe the Pune toxic liquor case, authorities are racing against time to prevent further deaths and destroy the illegal network of people who have been responsible for one of the region’s deadliest liquor tragedies in recent years.
