Punjab government employees' unions protested the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of Punjab on Monday for not fulfilling some long-standing demands, among which were the release of Dearness Allowance (DA), pension benefits, and resolution of service-related issues.
Those who were protesting expressed frustration over what they say was a lack of action by government entities on their issues. Protesters held up signs and yelled at the government to fix the problems in the system and for pensioners.

Among the main demands was the release of pending Dearness Allowance, which employees said was needed to cover the rising cost of living and inflation. Union representatives said DA is a vital part of employee welfare and should not be delayed, workers’ union representatives argued.
Protesters also raised pension issues and called for steps to protect the interests of retired government employees. Pensioners still have difficulties in getting benefits delivered, and the government should work to resolve these issues through structured dialogue and policy decisions, the union leaders said.
Besides DA and pension demands, employees also expressed other service-related concerns regarding pay structures, filling vacant positions, working conditions, and the government's commitment to deliver on commitments made with the employee group during previous discussions.
They said the protest was done to draw attention to problems that are still debated in government and that government employees play a central role in the delivery of public services and deserve swift action by the government to meet their legitimate demands.
The demonstration was largely peaceful; banners and placards were distributed about the demands made. Protesters pleaded with the Punjab government to hold meaningful talks with employees and come to an acceptable solution via negotiation.
The Aam Aadmi Party government has said that it is committed to the welfare of government staff and to balancing the state’s finances. But labor organizations say action is needed on the ground now to address their concerns reasonably.
The protest underlines continued issues that are still being discussed between employees and the state administration regarding financial and service issues. There have been periodic demonstrations in Punjab as unions push for increases in salaries, allowances, pensions, and employment.
If their demands are not listened to, they may escalate their protest in the coming weeks, the union representatives said. They hoped that the government would meet with employee leaders for talks and set a timetable for resolving the pending issues.
For now, the protest has made Punjab’s government workforce’s concerns more firmly front and center in people’s minds. The state government’s actions are also going to be closely watched by employees, pensioners, and labor organizations across the state for their reaction in the coming days.
