As part of a massive drive to control waste disposal, Bengaluru officials have imposed a fine of ₹75,000 on PVR Cinemas, a very big commercial place on Hosur Main Road. They found many problems in waste disposal and environmental regulations, they said.
According to officials, PVR Cinemas was failing to segregate waste properly from the source, which is a requirement under the city’s waste management guidelines. During inspections, officials discovered that waste categories had been mixed and not separated into wet and dry waste streams.
As a result, a penalty of ₹50,000 was imposed for improper waste segregation. The cinema complex was also found to be using banned single-use plastic items, which resulted in an additional fine of ₹25,000. The total penalty on the establishment was ₹75,000.
Forum Mall Staff Were Fined ₹50,839 For Illegal Waste Disposal
In a separate incident, officials also imposed a fine of ₹50,839 on staff in Forum Mall after illegal disposal of sewage treatment waste was detected near the commercial area.
The violation occurred near Shop Well Super Market in the Jayanagar Housing Society Layout on Uttarahalli–Kanakapura Main Road. The local residents informed city authorities after they found waste being dumped in the area.
After the complaint, officials performed an inspection and traced the waste to Forum Mall. According to authorities, mall staff admitted that the waste originated from their premises. A penalty of ₹50,839 was imposed and collected from those involved in the waste.

Civic Authorities Tighten Enforcement
The new penalties are part of a surge in Bengaluru City Council actions to make environmental regulations stricter and to improve waste management across the city. Proper waste segregation and scientific disposal are key to pollution reduction and public health, officials have repeatedly pointed out.
Improper waste handling, in the form of large commercial buildings like malls and multiplexes, could have a huge impact on the environment. Mixed waste ends up in landfills, recycling becomes a challenge, and municipal waste processing plants have more to do.
Similarly, the use of banned single-use plastic products is still a concern, and there are still awareness campaigns and regulations on that. There have been regular inspections, and many people are no longer using plastic products, which is a problem, but there are very few people have accepted the ban, and that is why we have to do inspections and are concerned about that.
Strict Warning Issued to Commercial Establishments
After receiving the fines, officials gave precise instructions to the management of the establishments. They instructed them to collect both wet and dry waste and dispose of it scientifically in accordance with municipal regulations.
Repeated violations could carry heavier penalties and more severe legal action in the future as well. Commercial establishments in Bengaluru must also be responsible for waste management and comply with environmental standards.
The action against PVR Cinemas and Forum Mall is a reminder that civic bodies are monitoring waste disposal practices and are prepared to take severe action against violators so that cleanliness and environmental sustainability are maintained in the city.
