New Delhi: The Congress is preparing for a big political outreach programme in Punjab as it looks to strengthen its organisation ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Rahul Gandhi will be going on a 135-kilometre bus ride through the state in the first week of September, and if he does, it will be from Amritsar to Hussainiwala. The exact date of the journey is not yet known.
The proposed tour comes at a time when the Punjab Congress is still divided among senior leaders. The Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi are the most prominent figures of rival camps in the state. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has also been seen closer to the Channi camp, adding another dimension to the factional tension.
The Congress leadership has held several talks with each other to try to patch up the differences but the internal conflict is still there. Recently Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel met Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi to discuss the Punjab tour and preparations for the upcoming Assembly election and the party has been preparing for it. The state unit has also been asked to prepare a detailed plan for Rahul Gandhi's tour.
Why Rahul Gandhi’s Punjab Bus Yatra matters?
The proposed bus journey is being seen as more than a routine political tour. The Congress is looking at the journey as a way to convene its senior Punjab leaders, and to convey to party workers that the organisation is united ahead of the election.
Rahul Gandhi is expected to travel with Warring, Channi and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, among other senior Congress leaders. The party leadership could also use a journey across the state to unite against such groups.
The proposed route from Amritsar to Hussainiwala could cover about 25 to 30 Assembly constituencies and pass through Punjab’s Majha, Doaba and Malwa regions. Rahul Gandhi is also expected to visit the Golden Temple before starting the bus journey.
The tour is likely to have three key purposes for the Congress. First, it may help the party leadership bring rival leaders on board. Second, it could bring Rahul Gandhi back to grassroots workers and local leaders. Thirdly, it might provide an early organisational push ahead of the 2027 Assembly campaign.
Warring-Channi Rivalry Remains A Challenge.
The biggest test for the Congress leadership is the rivalry between Warring and Channi. The party high command has continued to back Warring as state Congress president and has said little immediate change is planned to the leadership structure.
The Congress has maintained that it will not announce a chief ministerial candidate prior to the 2027 election. The position has not entirely settled the leadership question in the state unit, with the Channi supporters looking for changes while Warring supporters are still in favour of the current arrangement.
Randhawa has also been associated with the Channi camp. At a recent rally in Isru, Channi and Randhawa were shown up together while Warring was absent, and the Channi supporters were singing slogans in Channi’s favour. Such public displays of factional alignment have raised concerns about whether the party will be able to put up a united front during the campaigning.
The Congress has tried to address the issue in meetings. Party leaders, including AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal, have held discussions with Punjab leaders separately and collectively. Baghel has also attended the state as part of the party’s organisational activities.
Congress To Take The Lessons From 2024 Lok Sabha performance.
The internal differences are even more significant now as the Congress is looking to regain ground in Punjab after a steep fall in its Assembly strength. The party won 77 seats in 2017 Assembly election but was reduced to 18 seats in 2022. The 2022 election was fought under Channi, who at the time was the party’s chief minister.
However, the Congress showed signs of recovery in 2024 Lok Sabha election, winning seven out of Punjab’s 13 parliamentary seats. Channi, Warring and Randhawa were among the Congress leaders who won from the state.
The party will now try to convert that parliamentary performance into Assembly-level gains. That will take stronger grassroots organisation, better candidate selection and better coordination among its senior leaders.
The bus journey could therefore be a great test of whether the Congress leadership can go beyond internal rivalries and focus on the electoral contest.
Can The Bus Yatra end Congress Factionalism?
The success of the proposed journey will ultimately depend on what happens after the cameras are gone. A joint appearance by rival leaders could create a temporary show of unity, but sustaining that unity through candidate selection, campaigning and booth-level organisation will be a much bigger challenge.
The Congress is also considering giving senior Punjab leaders more involvement in the selection of candidates. And that would address the divergent factions’ concerns, if there is an assurance that the process is transparent and acceptable across the state unit.
The initial 135-kilometre journey could be followed up by another tour if it gets there, party officials said. At present, the plan is to begin in Amritsar after Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the Golden Temple and to move towards Hussainiwala and meet Congress workers, local leaders and supporters of the party.
If Rahul Gandhi is preparing for the 2027 Assembly election, the bus journey would give him the opportunity to have all Punjab Congress leaders on one platform. But whether that will eventually lead to unity is up to the party to reconcile its leadership divisions and remain in touch long after the journey is over.
