A picture of Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi with a woman and a child has triggered a new political controversy on social media.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh has questioned the identity of the people seen alongside Gandhi, asking, “Who are they?”.
The image and comments surrounding it have gained a lot of attention online as people, including the Congress leader, have debated the circumstances in which the photograph was taken.
But facts about the identity of individuals depicted in those photographs have to be independently verified before they are accepted as fact.
Giriraj Singh’s Remark Draws Attention
The question of Giriraj Singh has become something that political followers of the political party are talking about, especially on social media, where pictures of politicians can generate speculation in a short span of time.
Giriraj Singh’s remarks have brought people in to talk about Rahul Gandhi’s personal and public appearances, while political opponents are using the episode to raise questions about the Congress leader.

Viral Images Have Been Misrepresented Before

This woman is Priyanka Nandwana, a local Mahila Congress leader, and the children are members of her family and relatives.
Another viral video in 2025 was also presented online as Rahul Gandhi travelling abroad with a young woman. BOOM and DigitEye fact-checking found that the woman was his niece, Miraya Vadra, daughter of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
These examples are indicative of how photographs and videos of politicians are presented with misleading captions or interpretations once they are spread out on social media.
Political Debate Moves Online
Rahul Gandhi’s private and public life is once again in the spotlight of social media. While political leaders are frequently under scrutiny in relation to their activities and associations, the identities of private individuals shown in photographs should not be assumed without credible confirmation.
The episode also underscores how social media is important in Indian politics now. A single photo or comment can be highly political and can be very quickly debated, especially when high-profile leaders from the opposing side weigh in.
For now, Giriraj Singh’s “Who are they?” question has fuelled speculation online. If there is reliable evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the photograph and the identities of those depicted in it, then we should proceed cautiously with the case of Rahul Gandhi.
