Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their head coach for the IPL 2027 season, ending Stephen Fleming's long association with the franchise. The move is a significant change in CSK's coaching system as Zaheer becomes the first head coach in the Indian Premier League.
Wasim Jaffer, former India batter, has welcomed it and called CSK's decision good. Jaffer also expressed his happiness to see an Indian professional take charge of an IPL franchise in a senior coaching position.
Jaffer also welcomed this development on his YouTube channel and stressed the importance of Indian professionals getting opportunities in coaching roles. He also said Zaheer's experience and understanding of players is very good and the former left-arm pacer has the qualities to carry out the role of the franchise head coach.

Jaffer praised Zaheer's work during his previous franchise assignments and said he was surprised when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) decided to release him after just one season as a mentor.
Zaheer has a strong understanding of player personalities and a sensible approach to cricket, Jaffer says. And those qualities, he says, might help Zaheer handle the many demands of a head coach.
Jaffer also pointed out that Zaheer’s career in franchise cricket has given him experience in coaching and cricket administration. The former India pacer has previously worked with Mumbai Indians in senior cricket-development roles and later joined LSG as a mentor.
Zaheer's new position at CSK is a further step in his transition from playing to coaching and cricket management. His experience with different franchises has exposed him to player development, team planning and the broader organisational side of professional cricket.

Zaheer has been in Mumbai Indians senior cricket development roles in a number of areas such as Manager of Cricket Operations and Global Head of Cricket Development and Director of Cricket Operations. His association with one of the IPL’s most established franchises provided him with a good perspective on cricket operations outside the field of play as well.
He later joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor. Zaheer was in contact with LSG coaching and playing group in his time. His departure from the franchise after one season was a surprise to Jaffer who felt Zaheer had more to offer in the coaching environment.
Jaffer also said Zaheer could be in coaching roles during his post-playing career. The former India player believes that Zaheer's expertise would be suitable for coaching some of the more specialized roles like bowling coach as well as more general responsibilities that will have to be done by a head coach.
The CSK appointment now gives Zaheer an opportunity to take complete responsibility for an IPL team's coaching setup.
Stephen Fleming's Long CSK Tenure Ends.
Zaheer will replace Stephen Fleming, who had been CSK's head coach since 2009. Fleming's time with the club was over two decades and included one of the best coaching periods in IPL history.
CSK won five IPL titles under Fleming and was consistently one of the most successful teams in the competition. His coaching tenure was closely related to Dhoni and team management in the team, too.
Fleming had also been a CSK player in the IPL in 2008 before taking over the coaching role the following year. He then worked with Dhoni at Rising Pune Supergiant during the 2016 and 2017 seasons when CSK were suspended from the competition.
His departure after the 2026 season would then be a major chapter for CSK. Zaheer’s appointment would be one that will change the game as the franchise prepares for IPL 2027.
What Zaheer Khan Brings To CSK.
Zaheer arrives at CSK with experience as an international cricketer, franchise administrator, mentor and cricket-development professional. He was one of India’s best fast bowlers and was a part of the country’s successful campaigns in all formats.
He has also been able to work with coaching and cricket management players beyond his fast bowling specialty. The team’s preparation, strategy and coaching structure will now be far more involved in CSK.
This appointment is supposedly for a year with the possibility of a longer term. Zaheer's first season as CSK head coach will therefore be closely watched as the franchise begins a new coaching era after Fleming's departure.
Jaffer is also key in terms of the fact that it gives an Indian cricket professional the opportunity to lead an IPL franchise in the head coach role. CSK will enter IPL 2027 with a new coach and Zaheer will have to develop the team culture and then bring his own coaching style to the team from scratch.
