The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has gained momentum after the arrest of all eight named in the FIR. The arrested include cash-counting staff at the temple, senior officials who oversee the counting of the temple and a close associate of Ram Mandir Trust General Secretary Champat Rai.
The FIR was registered after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted its preliminary findings to the Uttar Pradesh government. Based on the report, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust initiated criminal proceedings against the accused.
The eight persons were in the group arrested on charges of theft, criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
Who are the eight people arrested?
According to the FIR, the following individuals have been arrested:
1. Ramashankar Yadav alias Tinnu. Driver and close friend of Ram Mandir Trust General Secretary Champat Rai. The investigators believe he was involved in the alleged diversion of donation money.
2. Anukalp Mishra. Head of cash-counting operation.
3. Subhash Srivastava. Cash-counting in charge. A retired bank employee responsible for overseeing the counting process.
4. Avinash Shukla. Cash-counting staff member.
5. Karunesh Pandey. Cash-counting staff member.
6. Manish Yadav. Cash-counting staff member.
7. Lavkush Mishra. Cash-counting staff member.
8. Rama Shankar Mishra. Cash-counting staff member.
According to investigators, all eight were directly involved in collecting, handling or counting cash donations received from devotees at the Ram Mandir.
What is the case?
The debate began when it was alleged that cash offerings made by devotees at Ram Mandir were being siphoned off before reaching the temple’s official accounts.Based on these allegations, the Uttar Pradesh government set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate it.
The SIT's initial report has alleged serious procedural lapses in the handling and counting of donations. Based on these findings, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust filed an FIR with the Ayodhya police.
Earlier, the SIT questioned several people involved in the cash-counting process, including Trust member Dr. Anil Mishra, about the appointment of staff and procedures followed while counting donations.
Does The FIR Name Champat Rai?
Despite opposition parties demanding action against senior Trust officials, including General Secretary Champat Rai, the FIR does not name him as an accused. Earlier reports indicated that the SIT’s preliminary findings did not recommend criminal proceedings against Rai.
But the authorities said that the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities is ongoing and any action would depend on the evidence collected during the investigation.
What has Yogi Adityanath said?
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed the controversy on X and advised people not to jump to conclusions before we have the investigation done.
He said:
"Our ancestors worked for 500 years to build the Ram Temple. Please wait another 15 days and have patience. Do not worry and do not fall prey to attempts to defame Ayodhya. If anyone is guilty, no matter who they are… they will not be spared."
Also speaking at a public function in Ayodhya, the Chief Minister criticized the Samajwadi Party and Congress, accusing them of double standards on the issue.
He stated:
"Looking at the dual nature of the Samajwadi Party today, they say that Ram devotees have been insulted. These are the same people who fired government bullets on kar sevaks and Ram devotees. At the request of Ram Temple Trust, we headed a SIT, and the investigation will establish the truth. I urge everyone not to make irresponsible comments that hurt the sentiments of Ram devotees."
Yogi Adityanath said that the SIT investigation would determine the facts and no guilty person would be spared, irrespective of their position.
What is Akhilesh Yadav saying?
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Uttar Pradesh government of trying to shield influential people from prosecution in the case.
He claimed that the formation of the SIT may have given enough time for evidence to be tampered with or removed and claimed that the government was “protecting the big fish” while lower-level individuals were being arrested.
His comments have intensified the political battle for control of the investigation, and the opposition wants to hold senior officials in the temple trust responsible.
Investigation Continues
But the Ram Mandir donation embezzlement case is far from over and even though the eight accused have been arrested, investigators are still looking into financial records, cash handling procedures and witness statements to see if others were involved.
The case has become politically sensitive, provoking bitter responses from both the ruling BJP and the opposition. The SIT’s investigation is ongoing, and it will be informed only by the evidence that comes up during the course of the investigation.
