A simple stone used by generations to keep a door of a house from opening has been revealed to be an extraordinary piece of amber, worth close to €1 million. Colți, a village in southeastern Romania, is where an elderly woman kept it inside her house for years.
The reddish-brown object weighed about 3.5 kilograms and was originally thought of as a common rock. The woman had found it in the bed of a nearby stream and brought it home and then used it as a simple doorstop.
It was only after her death that a relative was curious about the unusual-looking stone and decided to have it examined.
Doorstop Turns Out To Be Rare Amber
The discovery of the object was not an ordinary rock but a large piece of amber, a fossilised form of old tree resin. This is rumanite, a kind of Romanian amber (reddish in colour) known for its reddish appearance.
Experts took the specimen and verified its authenticity. Experts say that the amber might be 38.5 to 70 million years old, according to the report. It is also one of the largest known pieces of amber of its kind.
However, this discovery drew the Romanian authorities’ attention to it, and they acquired the specimen and made it a national treasure.
The piece is now associated with the Buzău County Museum, where its scientific and cultural significance can be studied and exhibited.
How did the Valuable Stone (and why) get discovered?
The unusual stone was found by the woman near a stream in Colți, an area of amber deposits. Rather than seeing it as an excellent mineral specimen, she treated it as a useful household object.
For decades, the amber simply served as a doorstop
The discovery was made more incredible because the house was previously targeted by burglars, the family claimed. There were some gold jewellery was stolen but the heavy stone was left behind because they did not know what it was.
After the woman died in 1991, her relative inherited the property and began to examine the object more closely. Suspecting that the unusual stone could have some value, the relative arranged for it to be examined.
Such an action turned an apparently worthless household object into an important discovery.
Amber is Fossilised Tree Resin
Amber is formed from the resin of old trees that hardened and changed over millions of years. It is valued not only as a semi-precious material used in jewellery and decorative objects but also for its scientific value.
In some cases, amber can preserve insects, plants and other organic material from the distant past as well as fossil remains of organisms—so scientists can study ancient ecosystems.
The age estimated for the Romanian specimen is tens of millions of years. Its size is also significant.
From Household Object To National Treasure
After experts verified the specimen, it was sold to the Romanian state and placed as a national treasure. Scientists of the Museum of History in Kraków, Poland, examined the amber and confirmed its authenticity, the newspaper said.
A scientifically significant specimen can be difficult to value. The value of the specimen has been put at around €1 million, and some reports put it at $1.1 million.
The story has drawn attention because of the fact that the object is not so much an object of appearance.
For decades, a valuable prehistoric material was sitting in a Romanian home, being used for one of the simplest household purposes imaginable—keeping a door open.
