Students in Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh have been granted an extra day of rest as the state governments officially declared all schools closed today. The decision was made in view of the 77th Republic Day celebrations held yesterday.
State-Wise School Status for January 27, 2026
While Republic Day (Jan 26) is a national holiday, several northern states have extended closures into today due to administrative directives, winter break schedules, or severe weather conditions.
| State/Region | School Status (Jan 27) | Primary Reason |
| Punjab | Closed | Special holiday declared by CM Bhagwant Mann |
| Chandigarh (UT) | Closed | Official administration directive |
| Delhi-NCR | Closed | Ongoing winter vacation block |
| Uttar Pradesh | Varies | Many districts closed due to cold wave/fog |
| Haryana | Closed | Extended winter break in several districts |
| South/Central India | Open | Regular academic schedule |
Punjab: CM Declares State-Wide Holiday
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the holiday on Monday during the state-level Republic Day function in Hoshiarpur. The directive applies to all:
- Government schools
- Aided and unaided private schools
- Recognized educational institutions
Punjab's School Education Department issued a formal notice following the CM's speech, instructing all district authorities to ensure strict compliance.
Chandigarh and North India Weather Adjustments
The Chandigarh Administration followed suit, declaring a holiday for all schools in the Union Territory. In addition to celebratory reasons, the move also provides relief from the intense cold wave and fog currently sweeping across North India.
In Delhi-NCR and parts of Uttar Pradesh, most schools were already scheduled to be closed as part of the annual winter vacation cycle. However, in southern and central states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, schools have resumed regular operations today.
When Will Schools Reopen?
In most regions where a one-day extension was granted (like Punjab), schools are expected to resume regular classes tomorrow, Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Parents and students are advised to stay in touch with their respective school administrations for any local updates regarding timing changes due to morning fog.
