The Shimla police have frozen assets worth ₹17 lakh of the illegal drug trade in a major crackdown on the drug market with a view to identifying and removing all the assets linked to drug trafficking business.
This is part of the ongoing campaign against the narcotics networks in Himachal Pradesh and reflects a police department’s increased emphasis in taking down the money behind organized crime’s financial infrastructure.
The assets were identified as part of an investigation into suspected drug trafficking operations, officials said. Law enforcement agencies traced the money and properties to persons accused of selling drugs.
These assets were frozen under the law and the accused can't transfer or use them if the investigation continues.
Police said they want to target those who are involved in drug trafficking and money gained through illegal activities. But removing access to illicit profit would greatly reduce the extent to which people commit crimes and deter future crimes, officials say.
Shimla Police have also intensified anti-drug operations over the past few months as raids, surveillance and intelligence-based drug investigations have been conducted across the district.
Many arrests have been made, narcotic drugs seized and people suspected of financing or facilitating drug-related crimes identified.
They said the fight against drug trafficking needs to take the form of a comprehensive approach which includes financial investigations as well as traditional policing methods.
Through freezing assets linked to criminal proceeds, investigators will be able to disrupt the economic base of trafficking syndicates.
The police also have appealed to citizens to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities related to drugs. Public involvement and strict law enforcement, along with the growing problem of drug abuse and illegal trafficking, is considered crucial in addressing the growing challenge.
In recent years, a number of anti-drug campaigns have been undertaken by the authorities to control the spread of drugs in Himachal Pradesh, especially among young people.
Education campaigns, prevention measures and better border surveillance have been combined to achieve this.
Investigators are checking financial records, bank transactions, and other evidence to see if more assets are linked to the alleged drug network.
More legal action is likely to be taken if more proceeds of crime are discovered during the investigation.
They also said anyone who is convicted of drug trafficking or aiding such operations will face severe consequences through the NDPS Act and other laws under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and others.
Shimla Police’s recent action sends a clear message that authorities are very keen to target drug traffickers and their money or rather the financial resources that enable them to keep their business running.
And as the investigation continues, law enforcement will also look for other leads to take down organized drug networks, to keep communities safe from the bad effects of drugs and eradicate them all.
