A new civic concern has emerged from Bengaluru’s busy Silk Board junction, with the condition of a drain drawing attention from citizens. Nandini Nagaraj posted a picture on her Facebook page that let us know about the state of the drain and asked Bengaluru South to look at the place and take necessary action.
The complaint was sent to the Bengaluru South administration for immediate action on the drainage infrastructure. Silk Board is one of Bengaluru’s busiest traffic corridors and has always seen problems related to stormwater drainage, waterlogging, garbage accumulation and ongoing infrastructure works.
The condition of stormwater drains at Silk Board has been a recurring civic concern. Heavy rain last year once again caused waterlogging around the junction, affecting traffic movements and exposing the drainage system’s limitations. Rainwater from various lakes, Madiwala being one of them, has put considerable pressure on the stormwater drainage system, reports said.
Drainage improvement work has already been done in the area. A project has been started to expand the capacity of a drain at Silk Board, which will be widened from 1.5m to 3.5m. Culvert work has also been carried out in the area to reduce waterlogging during heavy rain.
But the latest complaint indicates that maintenance and ground-level conditions remain a concern for residents and commuters. Poorly maintained or clogged drains can quickly become a serious problem during Bengaluru’s heavy rain spells, perhaps resulting in stagnant water, foul odours, mosquito breeding and flooding of adjoining roads and pedestrian areas.

Other reports recently suggested garbage and construction-related debris were contributing to drainage problems around Silk Board. During earlier cleanup efforts, more than 40 tonnes of waste was removed from drains in the area.
Silk Board is also experiencing major infrastructure changes like road and flyover work that have changed the traffic and the available road space. In fact, the ongoing drainage works have been cited as a reason for congestion in the area and as a reason why municipal agencies must balance construction and drainage and pedestrian safety.
We need stormwater drains to be functional at a junction that is a gateway to Bengaluru’s southern and eastern corridors, as well as the southern and eastern corridors to be maintained. Citizens want the concerned authorities to check the drain indicated in the complaint, clean up the waste or silt that is accumulated, and to ensure that the drainage system is in place before rain and further rains.
That complaint also highlights a broader problem facing Bengaluru: infrastructure projects can address long-term capacity problems, but regular maintenance remains equally important. Timely desilting, removal of solid waste and proper monitoring of drains could help prevent small blockages from becoming major flooding problems.
With Silk Board in the process of being under constant waterlogging and drainage problems, citizens will be watching closely if this latest complaint is followed by a prompt response from Bengaluru South authorities.
