Supriya Sule on Ajit Pawar's 'Last Wish' Remark Amid NCP Merger Buzz

A fresh speculation around a possible reunion of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has developed after senior leader and MP Supriya Sule made an emotional remark on her cousin, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Sule said: “It was my brother’s last wish.” This has revived the question of whether the party’s rival factions can ever unite.

The Nationalist Congress Party is still divided since the bitter split in 2023 when Ajit Pawar broke away from the camp of his uncle Sharad Pawar and joined the Maharashtra government. Since then, both sides have kept their political identities and continue to claim the party founded by Sharad Pawar in 1999.

Supriya Sule’s comments have been a subject of a lot of interest because they are coming at the same time political analysts are monitoring developments in the NCP. In her statement she did not explicitly state any merger plans and there has been speculation that the communication between the two sides might not have been completely severed.

Sule emphasized the importance of family ties even in spite of political differences. But she argued that disagreements in politics should not always damage personal relationships and that respect and affection are present in the Pawar family even if they are on opposite sides of Maharashtra's political landscape.

Her comments have also brought back new political discussions in Maharashtra, especially with election preparations towards future elections.

Political analysts believe that any possible reconciliation between the Sharad Pawar-led faction and Ajit Pawar’s camp would change the political situation in the state as a whole. As of now, neither has publicly spoken of merger talks.

Ajit Pawar has previously claimed political decisions were taken in service of the country and development and Sharad Pawar's party has always claimed to preserve the party's original ideology. Both sides still function independently although occasional public statements hint at cordial personal relations.

The NCP split is a very significant one in recent Maharashtra politics, and it has impacted alliances and political strategy in the state. Any signs of better relations between these two camps naturally breed speculation of a reunion, but both sides have opted out of making any public statement.

Supriya Sule’s emotional reference to Ajit Pawar has taken a personal dimension to an otherwise political debate. So whether her statement means the beginning of a new debate or just family sentiment is also unclear.

The NCP merger talks can’t be settled without a formal decision, but political observers will keep an eye on all the developments of the Pawar family and the future of the party.
