Namma Metro services on Bengaluru's Yellow Line were disrupted on Monday evening after a suspected suicide was reported on the up line at Huskur Road Metro Station. That happened around 5:50 pm on July 27, and immediate response from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and emergency personnel arrived.
According to BMRCL, traction power on the affected part was switched off immediately after the incident occurred. Safety and emergency protocols were put in place to protect the passengers, the Metro staff and the officials. As Metro was investigating, all necessary procedures were put in place, the investigation was ongoing, the transport authority said.
The disruption affected Bengaluru’s Yellow Line, one of the city’s most important Metro lines to major residential, commercial and industrial areas. The BMRCL said trains will not be operated between Electronic City and Bommasandra stations until further notice. The disrupted services caused anxiety among commuters when Metro stations see a lot of passenger traffic at the end of the evening.
The suspension on the affected stretch was a precautionary measure to allow emergency response teams to take over and investigations to be conducted to clear up and determine what should happen, officials said. Metro staff and security officials were available to assist passengers in the metro and in the train stations affected by the disruption to get people in the trains and control the crowd.
The Yellow Line is considered a key transport artery for thousands of employees in Bengaluru’s tech and manufacturing districts. Any disruption on the corridor would have a much bigger impact on mobility in the area - especially in Electronic City, home to many IT companies - and many people were forced to find other alternatives after the trains on the affected section stopped.
The identity of the individual involved has not been disclosed at this time. Police and Metro officials will investigate and will be able to determine what exactly could have precipitated the suspected suicide. Details will come to light later on once official procedures are put in place and all police and Metro officials are on the scene.
BMRCL said passenger safety is its top priority and all actions taken after the incident were in accordance with safety guidelines. The corporation also asked commuters to keep their patience and to work with Metro staff to finish the restoration work.
There are already efforts to resume normal operations on the Yellow Line. BMRCL officials say technical teams and operational staff are working to restore services at the earliest possible time. But officials say normal train movement can only resume after safety checks, investigations and operational clearances are completed.
The whole exercise is an example of the problems that urban transit systems have to face in a crisis. Some of the passengers are waiting for the metro to fully recover, but they should keep an eye on official updates and plan their trip.
