The explosion occurred during work hours, shaking the industrial estate. The powerful blast could be heard by workers in nearby factories and the panic of workers and local residents was felt by employees as they worked outside. Smoke and debris rose from the facility immediately after the explosion and emergency response was initiated, said the mayor.

According to preliminary reports, the boiler at the metal recycling unit exploded suddenly, causing severe damage to a part of the factory. One worker died at the site of the blast and four others were seriously burned and injured. With the severity of injuries and other injuries, the injured workers were rushed to a nearby hospital and transferred to a specialized hospital for treatment.

Emergency teams including people from the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, police officials, and factory safety officers moved in quickly to the site to conduct rescue operations. Firefighters ensured that the explosion didn’t set a larger fire inside the SIPCOT complex or spread to nearby industrial units.

The area has been secured and police are investigating. The explosion was caused by too much pressure inside the boiler, equipment failure, or a lack of safety, officials say. Workers from labour and industrial safety departments are to investigate the damaged machinery and check on the plant’s maintenance.

The factory workers and management representatives have also started recording statements to determine the sequence of events leading to the accident. A detailed forensic examination of the boiler would likely shed more light on what caused the explosion.

Industrial accidents involving boilers are a major concern in the manufacturing and recycling businesses. Safety experts stress continuous inspections, preventive maintenance, pressure monitoring systems, and adherence to workplace safety regulations are all a must for high-risk incidents.

The SIPCOT Industrial Estate at Gummidipoondi is one of Tamil Nadu’s major industrial hubs, home to several manufacturing and recycling companies. The incident has raised new doubts about industrial safety standards and the implementation of mandatory safety audits in high-risk factories.

The identity of the deceased worker has not yet been officially released based on the family notification process. A thorough investigation will be conducted and appropriate action will be taken if negligence or safety violations are found.

The condition of the four injured workers is still very serious, and doctors are monitoring their recovery. It is the second time the safety of workers in the factory has been shown to be critical, and hence there is a need for better safety measures in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.
