Tamil Nadu has made yet another important step in its digital healthcare journey with the launch of 'Nalam AI', a WhatsApp-based chatbot which can be used for booking outpatient department (OPD) appointments at government hospitals faster and more conveniently.
The pilot project was launched by Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian, and Minister T.M. Anbarasan, in a pilot project which will be implemented in government hospitals in 22 districts. According to them, this will reduce long queues, enhance patient convenience and reduce the cost of healthcare services for the masses who already use the platform every day.
Book Hospital Appointments Through WhatsApp
Through the pilot programme, patients can use WhatsApp to engage with the Nalam AI chatbot and book OPD appointments without visiting the hospital registration counter. The chatbot is designed to help users navigate the hospital, department and preferred consultation slot through a chatbot and then convey to them the hospital, department and preferred consultation slot.
Health officials expect that the service will shorten the wait times at hospitals and also ease the burden on registration desks at high-footfall government medical institutions.
Pilot Across 22 Districts
The first phase of Nalam AI is being rolled out in 22 districts where patients will be able to access OPD booking services digitally. Based on the pilot, the Tamil Nadu government will gradually expand the chatbot to hospitals across the state.
Officials are also expected to analyse user feedback, the success rate of appointments and system performance before implementing a statewide rollout.
Part of Tamil Nadu's Digital Governance Push
The launch of Nalam AI is in line with Tamil Nadu's transformation towards digital governance and citizen-driven public services. The state introduced the so-called 'Namma Arasu' WhatsApp chatbot last year, which enables citizens to access all kinds of government services—certificates, utility payments, welfare schemes and grievance redressal—through one conversation.
With Nalam AI, the Health Department is extending the same digital-first approach to healthcare, making hospital access more efficient while reducing paperwork and manual processes.
Why It Matters
Government hospitals in Tamil Nadu receive millions of patients each year, many of whom languish for hours waiting to register for consultations. By moving appointment booking for OPD appointments to WhatsApp, the government hopes to:
- Reduce overcrowding at registration counters.
- Limit waiting time in registration counters.
- Improve patient waiting time for patients.
- Promote appointment management for hospitals.
- Provide accessibility through a common messaging platform.
- Improve digital healthcare delivery in the state.
The effort also follows a growing national trend through AI-powered conversational platforms in public health. Recently, the Centre announced digital health initiatives such as the ‘Ayushman Sarathi’ WhatsApp chatbot to improve access to government health services, highlighting the increasing role of conversational AI in India’s healthcare ecosystem.
A Step Towards Smarter Public Healthcare
If successful in the pilot, Nalam AI will be a key component of Tamil Nadu's healthcare system, delivering patients the fastest and most convenient services. Combining artificial intelligence with WhatsApp, the state wants to make healthcare more accessible and to make public hospitals operationally efficient.
The pilot is a milestone in Tamil Nadu's push for digital innovation in healthcare delivery and can be used as a model for similar work in other states.
