A horrific crime has shaken Telangana after a 4-year-old girl was brutally kidnapped and killed in Narayanapet district which underscores once again that child safety measures must be improved, together with community attention to this problem.
According to police accounts, the child lived with her own grandparents in Narayanapet during those times for which the parents in Hyderabad put up a fight but ultimately secured a better future for the family. On the Thursday night, she was still asleep close to her grandparents and three men from the same village had abducted her.
Authorities said the accused took the girl to a nearby lake. The crime became known when the child was found dead, galvanising anger and hurt in the village and beyond. The police soon put it down and made arrests of the three suspects involved in the case.
State security authorities confirmed a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law with abduction, sexual assault and murder charges. The suspects are in custody and that others are being looked at.
But as a result the community is completely shocked and wants more severe punishment for the culprits in town. Many also worried about safety in rural places; children are left in the care of elderly family members when the parents leave for work at home.
Child rights professionals have condemned and called for improved measures to protect children from crime— including better monitoring of repeat offenders and awareness campaigns in villages. They say there is law to prevent children having to escape from harm but enforcement and community awareness and education are key gaps.
This tragedy also reveals just how much different migrant families are and what difficulties can be placed by outsiders on them emotionally, socially and economically. Parents tend to migrate to cities, where there are few options, to find a better deal for their children leaving their children behind in people’s care.
Parents and guardians, in addition, to keep children safe at night, the report said. Community involvement and spot-and-swift reporting of suspicious activity are also essential to reducing such crimes, it said.
Now investigation continues and justice is needed to ensure those young victims are brought to justice and systems that address the next trauma should be improved.
