A horrific road accident in Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh has once again highlighted the dangers of relying on digital navigation when doing so alone on unfamiliar roads. A car plunged into a deep construction pit according to Google Maps’ directions and narrowly survived what might have been a fatal accident, reported one newspaper.
Fortunately, the driver survived the incident with minor injuries, while the vehicle sustained significant damage.
The accident occurred on a highway under construction
According to early reports, the car was travelling from Venkatagiri towards Dakkili in Tirupati district. Since the driver and passengers were not familiar with the route, they were only able to use Google Maps for navigation.
The accident took place on the Erpedu-Penchalakona National Highway, where bridge construction work has been happening.
As the navigation app guided the vehicle along the route, the driver had not noticed that a section of the road had been excavated for the construction of a bridge. The car continued to move forward and fell directly into the deep pit.
Driver Escapes Major Tragedy
The impact did damage the car very much. The driver was lucky to escape with only minor injuries.
Residents and passers-by rushed to the scene after hearing the crash and helped rescue the driver from the damaged vehicle. Emergency responders were also alerted, and the injured person received medical attention.
There were no deaths in the incident.
Questions Over Road Safety
The accident has raised concerns about safety measures at road construction sites.
Residents have questioned whether warning signs, barricades, reflective markers, and diversion boards were installed near the excavation site to encourage motorists— especially those driving at night or using GPS navigation.
Proper signage and clear traffic diversions are key in highway construction zones to avoid such accidents.

Even if Google Maps is the most popular navigation tool, experts say, digital maps might not always show temporary road closures, road diversions or ongoing construction work in real time.
