Some parts of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rain and strong winds, bringing a noticeable change in weather conditions across the city and surrounding areas.
The spell of unsettled weather comes as the Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall in several parts of the state.
The local forecast of the India Meteorological Department for Tiruchirappalli on September 19 was partly cloudy with a possible moderate rain or thunderstorm. It also issued a warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. The same weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.
The weather change does assist the hot weather in parts of Tamil Nadu. But sudden rain and gusty winds may impact commuters travelling on two-wheelers and people in areas with exposed roads and open spaces.
The wider weather pattern is also active across Tamil Nadu. The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted rain, thunderstorms and strong winds in some districts, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in some areas. 11 districts were under a heavy-rain forecast on September 19.
For Tiruchirappalli, the IMD forecast shows the possibility of thunderstorms on September 19, 20 and 21. Moderate rain is also forecast for September 22, followed by light rain on September 23 and 24.
Nowhere is this weather more severe than when lightning strikes. People will have to be especially careful in a thunderstorm, especially under high winds if lightning strikes, too. People travelling through areas with trees, temporary structures or open electrical infrastructure should be especially wary in a strong wind.

The rain also underscores the need for good drainage in urban areas. Even moderate rainfall can bring short-term water accumulation on roads, particularly at low-lying sites. Recent reports from Trichy have highlighted road problems in the city after rainfall and so road drainage and road conditions ahead of the wetter months are a concern.
With more showers likely to be observed in the coming days, residents of Trichy and its surroundings can expect fluctuating weather conditions.
Rain and thunderstorm activity is expected to continue for several days into the coming days, but local authorities and commuters will be closely monitoring for further rainfall and thunderstorm activity as Tamil Nadu continues to be affected by unsettled weather.
