The Population Census is an important national exercise that provides demographic, social and economic information of India’s population. The information collected by the Census helps governments at the federal level and state level to develop policy and allocate resources for infrastructure and welfare programs based on the needs of the population, and to establish the government’s policy and allocate resources based on the population’s requirements.

Vijay had made the point that self-enumeration, and citizen participation in digital governance, is the key to success. The online self-enumeration system enables eligible citizens to submit their household details on a regular basis with less paperwork and in a way that will make data collection faster. The government has said citizens should make use of this facility when it is available.

Census is important to government officials and public figures who have stressed that accurate information is necessary to plan schools, hospitals, roads, public transport, drinking water projects, housing schemes, and other development activities. Reliable census data is also very useful for policymakers in determining the development of urbanization, migration, education, employment and population growth.

Census is widely regarded as the bedrock of evidence-based policymaking. Government departments use census statistics to measure the needs of communities and distribute resources more effectively. Researchers, economists, urban planners, and social scientists also use census data to monitor demographic changes and support long-term planning.

All census data is collected for statistical purposes strictly and is protected under the provisions of the Census Act. Individuals' responses are not shared with government, tax and law enforcement, or other administration. This is in order to encourage the citizens to provide complete and accurate information.

Vijay’s participation has made his supporters happy, with many of them saying it was a good example of civic responsibility. National actors who participate in such efforts help to raise awareness and encourage people to take part in them. Citizens should verify their data thoroughly before submitting it so they can be sure that it is accurate, said the data.

With India increasingly adopting digital governance, self-enumeration has become a convenient option for many households. However, the usual door-to-door enumeration will still be used to ensure that all households are covered including those without internet access.

Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate fully with census officials and complete the process within the prescribed timeline. Accurate data on the population will help governments make decisions about infrastructure development, education, healthcare, social welfare, disaster management, and economic planning.

Vijay’s participation in the Population Census is a reminder of the importance of civic engagement. So whether we are self-enumerating in an online way or we are in contact with census officials as they visit our house, every one of us plays a role in building a comprehensive demographic database that is beneficial for good governance and inclusive development.
