Pongal Gift 2026: TN Govt Likely to Give ₹3,000 Cash to Ration Card Holders

The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is set to delight over 2.2 crore rice ration card holders with a substantial festive gift. According to official sources, the state is preparing to distribute a ₹3,000 cash assistance alongside the traditional Pongal gift hamper in early January 2026.

The Proposed ₹3,000 Cash Component

While the government has not yet made a formal cabinet announcement, top officials in the Food and Civil Supplies Department indicate that the proposal for ₹3,000 is under "active consideration".

  • Why the Hike? In 2025, no cash was provided, which led to significant public criticism. With the 2026 elections nearing, the DMK government aims to provide substantial relief to low-income families.
  • Distribution: Distribution is expected to begin in the second week of January 2026. Tokens will likely be issued at doorsteps starting in the first week of January to prevent crowding at PDS shops.

What’s in the 2026 Pongal Hamper?

In addition to the cash, eligible cardholders (including Sri Lankan Tamils living in camps) will receive a festive kit containing:

  • 1 kg Raw Rice and 1 kg Sugar.
  • A Full Sugarcane.
  • Free Dhoti and Saree.
  • Essential Spices: Cashew nuts, raisins, and cardamom.

EPS Demands More: "Give ₹5,000 to Every Family"

The Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), has officially challenged the proposed amount. EPS has demanded that the government increase the cash gift to ₹5,000 per family.

"The DMK previously demanded ₹5,000 when they were in the opposition. Now, with the festival just weeks away, they must fulfill that promise. We gave ₹2,500 during the AIADMK tenure despite financial constraints; the current government must step up." — EPS.

Note: The official confirmation and government order (GO) are expected to be released by the Chief Minister's office during the final week of December 2025.
