Kerala’s Trivandrum Zoo has welcomed two zebras brought from Vantara in Gujarat, adding another attraction to the popular zoological park.
The zoo's new addition of two zebras will add to the zoo's vast animal collection and will generate much interest from wildlife lovers, families, and visitors. Zebras are familiar African equids with black-and-white striped coats and social behavior at the zoo.
The animals were transported from Vantara, a major wildlife conservation and animal-care facility in Gujarat, to Trivandrum Zoo in an animal exchange or transfer effort. Such transfers between zoological institutions can help improve animal collections in addition to supporting conservation, breeding and public education programs.
The introduction of the zebras will give people the chance to see the species at close range in a managed zoological environment. Zoos are vital to the public learning how to be wildlife conservation ambassadors and keep endangered and vulnerable species alive and safe.

For Trivandrum Zoo, the arrival is another step in improving its collection and introducing a wide variety of animals to the public for them to browse through. The zoo is one of Kerala’s major biodiversity attractions and attracts visitors from across the state as well as tourists from outside Kerala.
The two zebras will undergo the acclimatisation process following their arrival. Newly transferred animals usually take some time to acclimatize to the new environment, new enclosure, new climate, and new feeding routines. The animal care team monitors them during the transition period to keep them healthy and well-fed.
This transfer also shows the need for cooperation between zoological institutions and wildlife-care facilities. Animals moving from accredited facilities can assist in conservation plans and the establishment of healthy and genetically diverse populations of animals.
Vantara, located in Gujarat, has developed into a leading animal-care and conservation centre, housing a wide range of species and taking part in rehabilitation and welfare programmes. Animals transferred from these facilities to zoos can be part of a wider effort to support wildlife management and conservation awareness.
The zebras will also be a new attraction at Trivandrum Zoo for children and families. They are striking and have herd-based social behaviour, and are among the most recognised animals of African wildlife.
This is in keeping with the fact that zoological parks are increasingly concerned with not only exhibiting animals but also conservation, veterinary care, habitat management and awareness programs. The environment and behaviour of animals in nature can be seen through the tourists’ eyes and what is happening to animals in the wild.
With the arrival of two zebras from Vantara, Trivandrum Zoo has added another unique species to its collection. Their presence will provide a better experience to the visitor while helping to raise public awareness about wildlife conservation and responsible animal care.
