India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has achieved the major milestone of having over 55.49 crore users on the platform by June 2026 as the country’s digital payments ecosystem continues to grow and develop at a rapid pace.
The new data point to UPI becoming the leading player in the Indian financial system. UPI carried out 24,161.69 crore transactions worth ₹314.23 lakh crore in the year 2025-26 of the government in Parliament. The transaction value is around US$3.56 trillion and shows an extraordinary scale of India’s real-time payments infrastructure.
The data shows that UPI has continued to grow dramatically over the past five years. Transaction volumes rose from 4,595.61 crore in FY22 to more than 24,161 crore in FY26. In the same period, the value of transactions increased from ₹84.16 lakh crore to ₹314.23 lakh crore.
The latest numbers reinforce UPI’s position as one of the world’s largest real-time digital payment systems.
UPI Becomes A Daily Payment Habit
UPI is now deeply embedded in everyday financial transactions across India and in small roadside vendors and small stores and e-commerce platforms.
The rapid growth of QR-code payments, smartphones, affordable internet access and digital banking has brought millions of users into the formal digital payments ecosystem.
The platform has also made small-value transactions faster and easier, allowing users to transfer money instantly without cash or traditional banking processes.
Security Measures Expanded
We also see that the rapid growth of UPI has also increased the focus on payment security and fraud prevention.
The government, the Reserve Bank of India and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) have taken on to strengthen the ecosystem. It includes risk-based transaction limits, checks and balances on unauthorized mobile number changes, and stronger security requirements for UPI applications.
The Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework 2025 has also been introduced as part of efforts to strengthen the overall security architecture.
India Takes UPI Global
UPI’s expansion is no longer restricted to India.
NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NPCI, is working along with international partners to expand UPI and RuPay in the global markets.
UPI-linked payment arrangements are now in place in many international partnerships such as Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Qatar, Greece and Cambodia.
These partnerships are designed to facilitate cross-border payments for Indian tourists, businesses and the Indian diaspora while also helping partner countries develop real-time payment systems.
Growth Continues Into FY27
The momentum continued in the current financial year. NPCI data showed that UPI processed more than 23.2 billion transactions worth more than ₹29.9 lakh crore in May 2026 while June saw over 22.7 billion transactions worth around ₹28.9 lakh crore.
Although monthly volumes can fluctuate, the overall trend is clear: UPI is now a key pillar of India’s digital economy.
With 55.49 crore users onboarded and annual transaction value crossing ₹314 lakh crore, India’s digital payments revolution is entering a new phase.
The challenge now is to maintain the reliability of the system, enhance the protection against fraud and to expand access to the users who are not part of the formal digital financial system.
At present, the numbers tell a very compelling story: India isn’t just moving towards a cashless economy, but real-time payments infrastructure has become a global benchmark.
