All six stanzas of India’s national song “Vande Mataram” were recited in the BJP headquarters in Delhi ahead of a key organisational meeting chaired by BJP national president Nitin Nabin. This was before the party’s newly appointed national office-bearers had been gathered, making the meeting a very ceremonial start.
The BJP is in the process of beefing up its organisation and coordinating the duties of its newly appointed leadership team.
The meeting will be held at the BJP headquarters with Nitin Nabin, who steps up to the national stage as the party leader recently. The presence of the newly appointed national office-bearers makes the gathering important from an organisational point of view as the leadership will discuss the party’s functioning, priorities and coordination across different levels. The BJP leadership can arrange more coordination amongst the senior office-bearers and lay out their responsibilities within their respective organisation.
The singing of all six stanzas of “Vande Mataram” prior to the meeting also attracted attention because the national song has long been associated with India’s cultural and political history.
“Vande Mataram”, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, is by far the most famous song in India’s freedom movement and could also be considered one of the most important songs of our time. From Chattopadhyay’s novel Anandamath in the 19th century, the song’s opening lines were published and the song has long been associated with nationalism against British rule.
Over the years, “Vande Mataram” has been part of India’s public and cultural life. It is the national song and “Jana Gana Mana” is the national anthem. The two are different but important in the country’s national traditions. In the context of national identity, patriotism and respect for the freedom struggle of India, the singing of “Vande Mataram” at political and public occasions has often been used to emphasize the theme.
The Delhi meeting comes as the BJP is working to further develop its network of organisational strength as it is going to focus on strengthening the organisation under its new national president Nitin Nabin. Nitin Nabin will be involved in the party’s national level coordination and collaboration with the senior leadership and state units of the organisation. For these leaders, as they have started to take on new responsibilities and work together to achieve the party’s larger organisational mission, a meeting with the new office-bearers is very important considering that these are the ones who are starting to take on their responsibilities.
The gathering would also provide a forum for coordination and future political activities. National office-bearers are also key to the organisation of a political party— communication, outreach, coordination at the state level and the implementation of national programmes. Leadership meetings with the party structure will help determine a common direction and ensure the party’s message and organisational activities are in sync across regions.
The full recitation of “Vande Mataram” before the BJP meeting adds a symbolic aspect to the event. The BJP has always stressed national symbols and patriotic themes in its political message and the national song has been part of most of the party’s programmes.
So the decision to recite all six stanzas before the organisational meeting as a ceremonial opening is in line with the party’s broader thrust on national identity.
The event also shows how important political parties’ organisational meetings are when they have changed their leadership structure. The new office-bearers will be brought together with the BJP leadership, allowing them to reflect on their positions, establish lines of communication, and prepare for upcoming political and organisational issues. Such meetings are very important for the central leadership to make sure that decisions made by the central leadership are communicated to state and grassroots level units effectively on a regular basis.
For Nitin Nabin, the meeting is an opportunity to connect with the party’s new office-bearers and begin to shape the organisation’s priorities as his leadership is taking shape. The national president of BJP is central to the party’s organisational apparatus and coordination of office-bearers will be essential in making sure that the leadership will execute the ideas of the party and the party organisational hierarchy.
The recitation of “Vande Mataram” ultimately provided a patriotic opening to the BJP’s Delhi meeting, while the subsequent gathering placed the focus on organisational responsibilities and coordination. When Nitin Nabin hosts the meeting with new national office-bearers, decision making and priorities will follow. The event combines a symbolic tribute to India’s national song with an important organisational exercise for BJP national leadership.
