In today’s digital world, social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube and TikTok constantly are crowded with short videos called reels. These reels can be fun and educational, but sometimes they include harmful or dangerous content. It’s quite evident that a young boy recently began manufacturing illegal weapons after viewing reels online. When his father found out, he reacted angrily and violently, and beat his son. This story shows the grave dangers of unfettered content online and the necessity of steering children in their digital journey.
The boy, spurred on by the reels on Instagram, started playing with materials to produce weapons. He didn't appreciate the legal or ethical impact of his actions. It was to him more a matter of copying what he saw online than realising the risk. His father was furious when he found out. Rather than calmly describing the dangers and calling off the activity, he swung into physical punishment. While this is a reaction based on fear and frustration, it begs the question of how we should parent and how families must respond.
So this incident is not just about one family. It is symptomatic of a broader societal problem today. Children and teenagers spend hours on social media, sometimes without supervision. Content that might be out of line, misleading or illegal is promoted by algorithms. Young brains can be influenced easily — they want to learn and change things up. Making weapons is one thing, then trying dangerous stunts and copying harmful behaviour are all other examples of how online trends can pose real-world risks.
Violence isn’t the answer, the anger of the father is understandable. While beating a child may temporarily curb the behavior, it does not provide the correct lesson. Instead, parents must communicate thoroughly, explain the threats, and set clear boundaries. Better ways to protect children are monitoring their online activity, encouraging them to form hobbies in a safe way and teaching them how to think critically, research their own questions. In the meantime, education programs at schools and in the community help the young to stay aware of what to do with technology.
The tale of the boy and his father is the wake-up call. Social media can be powerful, but when left without guidance it can lead kids into harmful actions. Parents need to be active, discuss this with their kids and help them realize the distinction between entertainment and reality. Violence (at home) is not the solution, the solution is awareness, education and communication which are the main issues to keep the young safe in the digital era.
