The Legal Battle Against Trolls

For the past few months, Vijayalakshmi has been the target of relentless cyberbullying and character assassination on social media. Deciding to take a firm stand, she arrived at the South Cyber Crime Police Station in Bengaluru to seek justice.

Key Details of the Complaint:

  • Targeted Accounts: The complaint specifically names 15 Instagram IDs that have been consistently posting offensive material.
  • Volume of Abuse: Vijayalakshmi submitted evidence of over 150 obscene comments and posts directed at her.
  • Evidence Provided: Accompanied by her legal counsel, she handed over screenshots and digital footprints of the abusive content as evidence for the investigation.

From Local Station to Cyber Headquarters

The process of filing the complaint saw Vijayalakshmi moving through different wings of the Bengaluru Police:

  1. Banashankari Police Station: Initially, she approached the local Banashankari station.
  2. Referral: Recognizing the digital nature of the crime, local officers directed her to the specialized Cyber Crime wing.
  3. Commissioner's Office: She then proceeded to the City Police Commissioner’s Office and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) headquarters.
  4. Meeting with Top Brass: She waited to meet Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajay Hilori, IPS, to personally brief him on the severity of the online abuse.

Legal Move: While Vijayalakshmi chose not to address the media personally, her lawyer confirmed that the complaint was filed under relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act and Indian penal laws pertaining to the modesty of women.

A Pattern of Harassment

This is not the first time Vijayalakshmi has faced online vitriol. Ever since the legal complications involving her husband, Darshan, began, she has frequently been subjected to coordinated trolling. While she had previously ignored minor comments, the recent escalation into "obscene and unparliamentary language" prompted this legal action.

Official Response

Police officials from the CCB have stated that they are tracking the IP addresses and registration details of the 15 reported Instagram accounts. "We take online harassment against women very seriously. Cyber patrolling is being intensified to identify the individuals behind these handles," an officer stated.
