A vehicle with registration number KA03 KQ6190 approached her and made sexually suggestive remarks and propositioned her for money.

The incident has generated widespread social media discussion and people are calling for the prosecution to go all the way and be more serious. Police and prosecutors should go through the vehicle registration number and look into the allegations.

She said she was waiting for her booked cab when the man approached her and talked about money. She said he made offensive comments and tried to solicit her with an indecent proposal involving money. She says now she’s feeling unsafe and disturbed.

No official declaration of the accused’s identity and the outcome of any police investigation has been made at the time of writing. The police will examine the allegations thoroughly and take appropriate legal action if there is evidence.

Once again, it underscored how harassment of women is still prevalent in public venues.

Safety advocates say such attacks dissuade women from stepping into public spaces and only serve to reinforce the need for more surveillance, quicker police response, and stricter enforcement of harassment laws.

Social media users have also stressed that no woman should have to encounter harassment in transit or at all while waiting for the bus or doing everyday business.

Police patrolling in vulnerable areas needs to be increased, and CCTV cameras are to be installed with criminal action taken against offenders in the future.

Women’s rights groups have long stressed that safer public spaces require both effective law enforcement and public awareness.

All harassment complaints should be taken seriously and investigated, they say.

If the allegations are proven, the accused could be charged with violation of specific provisions of Indian law on sexual harassment, outraging the modesty of a woman, and other crimes if the findings of the investigation come to light.

The case is another example of how women’s safety must be a collective responsibility. Public spaces should also be safe for all and should be quickly taken care of complaints should be answered and due process followed.
