The incident took place on Saturday when Woman Constable Nikita, No. 381/Metro, was on patrol duty at Hauz Khas Metro Station. She noticed a teenage girl moving dangerously close to the metro tracks. Police said the girl appeared to be trying to end her life.

When Nikita realized everything was serious, she intervened and restrained the girl before she could reach the tracks. The girl tried to move towards the track area several times but the constable remained vigilant and kept her away from danger, officials said.

Nikita then informed the police station about the incident. Based on the information, ASI Raj Kumar was assigned to the matter. The girl was taken to the Yellow Line Station Control Room with the help of other police personnel in order to find out her identity and to communicate with her family.

The minor was initially reluctant to share personal details at first, but Nikita was patient, and she reassured her, so police personnel were able to know more about her and her family and identity and what she did. That sensitive approach helped to make contact with the girl at a crucial moment.

Police later identified the girl as a 16-year-old resident of Sector 5 in RK Puram, Delhi. Her father was contacted and arrived at the station control room to take care of her.

Police learned that the girl had been in the hospital for about a year for a mental health-related condition at RML Hospital. She had attempted to harm herself prior to then, officials said.

The girl was then given to her father safely after the inquiry and formalities were completed. The safety and protection of the minor were considered in the process, the police said.

Great security and police officers at public transport hubs need to be on their guard. Metro stations see huge crowds and there are always people there, and it is important to watch as passengers are being harassed.

The police praised Constable Nikita's timely response to the situation and her alertness and sensitivity in the immediate event to prevent the girl from getting killed. She not only prevented the girl from getting onto the tracks but she also made sure that she was reunited with her family.

The incident also underscores the importance of responding sensitively when a minor is in distress, especially a child. The constable’s calm and patient conduct in this case helped to calm the girl and establish communication, which was instrumental in helping police identify her and contact her family.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of watching out at metro stations and other places where immediate prevention of such incidents is necessary and could prevent serious incidents. The swift response at Hauz Khas Metro Station ensured that the teenage girl was taken away from the risk of danger and returned safely to her father’s care.
