Woman Doctor Robbed Of Gold Chain Inside SKMCH Campus In Muzaffarpur, Probe Underway

A woman doctor was robbed of a gold chain worth ₹1 lakh in the vicinity of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The doctor was walking from her hostel to the gynaecology department of the hospital in the morning when she was robbed of the gold chain in the vicinity of the hospital’s main gynaecology department, police said. Security of one of the country’s main government medical centres has been raised for a time after a chain snatching attack.

According to the preliminary information, the doctor was walking from her hostel to the gynaecology department on foot when two unidentified men on a motorcycle came and approached her. They took off her gold chain which she was wearing and fled from the area on their bike. The value of the stolen chain has been estimated at about ₹1 lakh.

The incident took place on the SKMCH campus, where doctors, medical students, nurses, patients and their relatives regularly transfer between departments and residential facilities. A robbery like this inside the hospital has made the need for security measures at the campus more imminent.

Police began to examine CCTV footage from the area after the incident. Investigators are expected to look at recordings from cameras at various points around the hospital campus and nearby routes to identify suspects and establish the sequence of events.

The two men then used a motorcycle to escape, having taken the doctor’s chain, the investigation showed. CCTV footage could help investigators trace the motorcycle’s course and identify those involved. Police could also look at footage from the roads outside the hospital if the suspects were moving beyond the hospital after the incident.

Chain snatching by two-wheeler-borne suspects has been reported across the country and criminals often try to escape from a crime scene before it takes place due to the attention of pedestrians. But this was a busy medical campus where people and vehicles could be moving in and out, allowing investigators to follow up on tips and evidence.

The police investigation is currently focused on identifying the two men. CCTV footage and other information about the incident will be collected by the investigators. Information from the complainant and other people who might have been in the vicinity could also be considered.

The incident has also raised security concerns for medical professionals who live or work on hospital campuses. Doctors and other healthcare workers are often on the move between hostels, wards, laboratories and departments throughout the day. Good lighting, surveillance cameras, security personnel, and controlled access are needed to keep the hospital with such large complexes secure.

Hospital campuses are also high-traffic areas for patients and their families, where people carry mobile phones, jewellery, cash and other valuables with them throughout the day and are full of people at the same time. A security incident inside such a location can, therefore, affect the safety of the people who are visiting or working there.

Authorities have not yet made public the identities of the suspects or any arrests in relation to the alleged chain snatching. So the investigation will be very much based on video evidence and other evidence taken at the site. Police also need to verify the sequence of events and establish the circumstances under which the gold chain was allegedly taken.

That comes as street theft and chain-snatching continues to be a big concern, particularly among motorcycle-borne offenders. That makes such cases difficult for investigators, as suspects quickly leave the scene, so surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts are essential evidence sources.

As Muzaffarpur Police carry out their investigation, no more details are known about the suspects, the route of the motorcycle, and whether the stolen gold chain can be recovered. For now, the alleged robbery is still under investigation and the CCTV footage is being studied as police search for the culprits.
