The debate over the existence of ghosts is as old as time, and while cinema often relies on jump-scares and special effects, a new series on Amazon Prime Video (also streaming on Amazon MX Player) is grounding the horror in a haunting reality. "Bhay: The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery" a gritty 8-episode-long story about the life of India’s most famous paranormal investigator has taken the digital realm by storm. Directed by Robbie Grewal, the series is not a work of fiction but is based on the book ‘Ghost Hunter Gaurav Tiwari: The Life and Legacy of India’s Foremost Paranormal Investigator’ by Abhirup Dhar.
From the Cockpit to the Haunted Corridor
Gaurav Tiwari, born in 1984 in Bihar, was pursuing a dream as far from supernatural as he could get: He wanted to fly. He accomplished this and became a professional pilot. But then a life-altering experience took him in an entirely new direction. Legend said and his own recollections was a supernatural thing saved him from a plane accident, making him an obsession with the "other side".

Gaurav ultimately swapped the flightboards of his pilot for an EMF meter and created the Indian Paranormal Society (IPS). That mission was simple but powerful: “Knowledge Cancels Fear.” His mission was a scientific approach to ghost hunting that would employ technology to tell the difference between psychological phenomena and real paranormal activity.
The Mystery of July 2016
The series’s most jarring element is the series’ focus on the sudden, chilling demise of Gaurav. In July 2016, Gaurav, 31, was discovered dead in his Dwarka home under circumstances that remain a subject of intense speculation. And while authorities declared it a suicide, his family and fans cited his late-night investigations into dark forces as a potential reason for his death as part of the cause of his life.
The web show stars Karan Tacker playing Gaurav and Kalki Koechlin as a researcher digging into his past. It skillfully integrates:
- True Case Files: He would have shown his haunting scenes on stage in the way it is now staged - including his haunted sequences at Bhangarh Fort and Lambi Dehar Mines.
- Original Footage: Including actual footage from Gaurav's investigations increases the level of accuracy that even the most voracious audience member shivers.
- Psychological Depth: This show seeks to explore the psychological impact of "always staring into the abyss."
Why You Should Watch It
“Bhay” is notable for its refusal to follow that traditional “white-saree” template common to Indian horror. It is a slow-burning procedural thriller and one that respects the intelligence of the viewership. For the "strong heart" viewer, the 8 episodes are a rush of excitement that’s further boosted by hearing that the man presented onscreen actually lived through these experiences. The series is now in Hindi and its non-chronological storytelling is intriguing; it cuts between Gaurav’s rise to media stardom and the inquiry into his last days.
