It's all set in Palakkad, Kerala, where Charulatha lives and her pet dog, Suttu, are at her side. What starts out as a low‑stakes incident becomes a tempest of gossip, mob rage, and moral policing. The story in a clever way illustrates how familiar acts can be easily turned into madness when fueled by gossip and bigotry. Tovino Thomas’s dog helps pack a punch in this story with humor and emotional depth, too. It is through its mixture of satire with fantasy that the film exposes the contradictions inherent to village life and human nature.

Rajesh Madhavan, as a director debut for Malayalam, his distinctive take on film is new. His direction draws on local locales and takes the authenticity of village scenes to another level of humour and reflection. Its storytelling is easy on you but profound, you can identify with the characters, places and scenarios. Based on real villagers, along with a cast of more than 100 new actors is what keeps things so real in nature.

It stars Raina Radhakrishnan, Subhash Chandran, Varsha Valsan and a few newcomers. Tovino Thomas’s voice performance as Suttu the dog is very much in the spotlight. It brings charm and friendliness. The fact that Tovino Thomas has spoken in full voice as Suttu is a surprise, thanks to Tovino Thomas’s acting at times, was another thing that people really admired about it. Sabin Uralikandy serves as cinematographer, Chaman Chakko is director of editing and Dawn Vincent is in charge of music, these technical personnel guarantee the film continues to capture both visual and emotional appeal.

Audiences have praised the originality. The film’s observations on mob justice and moral policing were thought‑provoking and entertaining for many viewers. I like that all‑round fun mixed with a bit of whimsy and some serious talk about social issues. It has been a bit ahead of the line up a few years down the line in Malayalam cinema. With its forthcoming Netflix debut, the movie is set to find a broader international audience.

Pennum Porattum is comedy as well as a commentary about the flaws in society, and the perils of unbridled rumors. Combining satire, fantasy and realism, the film shares both laughs and lessons. It is slated to be one of the most discussed Malayalam films of 2026, with its theatre success and Netflix release.
