Kolkata High Court Orders Arrest of Cricketer Abishek Porel in Sexual Assault and Threat Case

Abishek Porel is now in trouble after the Kolkata High Court directed him to be arrested for sexual assault, criminal intimidation, and a physical relationship under the false promise of marriage. It has attracted a lot of attention as a young Indian cricket player and also because of his association with the Delhi Capitals of the IPL.

Last month, a woman filed a complaint against the 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who claimed Porel had begun a relationship with her after offering marriage and had even promised to marry her, she said, but later refused to fulfil the promise and attacked and threatened her when she approached him about marriage. A police investigation has since been launched, and serious criminal scrutiny has been initiated against the young cricketer.

An FIR was registered against Porel at Mogra Police Station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. The charges against Porel are serious ones, which led to the complaint being filed with the Kolkata High Court. An investigation has been initiated, and law enforcement has been instructed to act immediately and take up the case, said the court.

The High Court has required the police to arrest the accused cricketer and carry out the investigation with speed. Also, investigators have been asked to seize Porel’s electronic devices and gadgets, which could be part of the evidence in the case. Digital evidence needs to be preserved if the case is to be investigated rigorously; the court’s directive says.

The development is a big blow for Porel, who has been one of Bengal’s most promising young cricket players in the past few years. He represents Bengal in domestic cricket and has gained a reputation for being a reliable wicketkeeper-batter. His performances in domestic competitions secured him a place in the IPL, and he has been with Delhi Capitals since the 2023 season.

Porel has played 32 first-class and 23 List A matches in his career so far. He has played 35 games for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, and his batting and wicketkeeping ability are well recognised. His rise in Indian cricket has made him a player to watch for the future.

But now the legal action has thrown a spanner in his cricketing wheel. The serious criminal charges have serious professional implications, particularly for public figures and athletes. Porel will likely not play competitive cricket now, but the case will certainly catch the attention of cricket administrators and the club’s officials.

The police are expected to provide a status update on the investigation and describe the actions taken against the accused so far, the report said. The court will then consider and decide on the next step.

We note that the allegations against Abishek Porel are still being investigated, and no court has convicted him yet. Evidence will be collected, and the allegations made in the complaint will be investigated. But so far, it has become one of the most talked-about controversies involving a young Indian cricketer this year.
