Lavindra Jadeja has triggered speculation on social media after he responded to a BCCI post inviting applications for a vacant position on the Indian men’s senior selection committee.

The veteran all-rounder’s short query on application procedure came just two days after Ajit Agarkar stepped down as the chief selector and fans wondered if Jadeja’s post was linked to the former selector’s exit.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced applications were open for one position on the men's selection committee. Jadeja answered with the short question: “What the procedure?” The seemingly casual question caught everyone’s attention because of its timing and because Jadeja’s lack of activity on the social media site.

There has been no public confirmation of any disagreements between Jadeja and Agarkar. Most of the speculation was on the nature of the post, the history of selection of Jadeja during Agarkar’s tenure and the reason why the former India cricketer resigned.

Jadeja’s Post Generates Social Media Buzz

Jadeja’s reply quickly became a talking point among cricket fans. Although the post didn’t explicitly mention Agarkar, nor did it make any allegations against the former selector, some fans took the timing to be significant.

Agarkar was crucial in India’s selection strategy during a period of transition in the white-ball teams. His tenure involved changes to the T20I squad after India’s poor campaign at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

The selection committee was then put to work to develop younger players and build a new-look T20I side. It was even more difficult when experienced players returned to the format prior to the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jadeja were all part of India’s T20I setup for the tournament which India won. Three days after winning the title, all three announced their retirements from T20I cricket and paved the way for the next stage of India’s transition to white-ball cricket.

Jadeja’s Selection History During Agarkar Era

Jadeja remained a key member of India’s limited-overs team, but also was left out of ODI squads. He was not included in India’s ODI team for the 2024 Sri Lanka series and was also absent from the squad for the 2025 Australia series.

And despite those exclusions, Agarkar had previously identified Jadeja as an important part of India’s ODI plans. The decisions, therefore, did not necessarily suggest that there would be a permanent change in the all-rounder’s place in the national setup.

Jadeja himself has admitted that selection decisions are made by the team management and selectors. When asked about his absence from an ODI series, he indicated that he wanted to play but recognised that the selectors, coach and captain would have their own reasons to make selection decisions.

Such history has now added context to his latest social media response, although there is no evidence from Jadeja’s post itself that he was making a serious application for the vacant selection position.

No Public Fallout Between Jadeja And Agarkar

Despite the online speculation, Jadeja and Agarkar have not been involved in any public situation. Their professional relations have mostly been based on selection decisions and public statements rather than disputes.

The speculation about Jadeja’s post is based mostly on timing and interpretation. A short social media question can have many explanations, and it does not by itself establish a disagreement between a player and a former selector.

Agarkar’s tenure also saw a wide range of changes in Indian cricket. The selection committee must balance the experience of the established players with the emergence of younger talent in all formats.

The transition was particularly noticeable in T20Is, when India was moving towards a younger core after the retirement of several senior players after the 2024 World Cup. Jadeja’s retirement from T20Is was part of that overall transition.

Jadeja Expected To Return For New Zealand Tour

Jadeja’s next big assignment could be India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand. The all-rounder is an experienced option across formats and has always been considered in the Indian team's ODI plans.

His role is always going to be important as India is balancing experience with the development of younger players. Jadeja has the ability to contribute with both bat and ball, which is valuable in the ODI format as the team prepares for future international assignments.

But until now his “What the procedure?” response remains a social media talking point rather than a sign of any move into cricket administration.

The BCCI’s search for a new member of the men’s selection committee will be closely watched, especially after Agarkar’s departure. Whether Jadeja’s post was just a joke to poke fun at the board’s announcement or something more is not clear.

Until Jadeja or the BCCI provides further clarification, speculation about a possible rift between the all-rounder and Agarkar remains unsubstantiated. The post has nevertheless attracted a lot of attention because it came at a point in time when India's selection committee was working and after a time when Jadeja's own selection had been on the table for a while.
