India’s gymnastics team has become a global superstardom after Ariha Pangambam won the gold medal at the Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships in the Philippines. The 22-year-old from Imphal (Manipur) who was awarded the gold medal as the senior individual woman in that discipline, is a first in the history of gymnastics in India. Pangambam was the winner of the final round against the best in the world and the best of Asia who were Kanokpit Mali of Thailand and Mahiro Kishibe of Japan. Her perfect routine breakdown was excellent with 8.650 points for artistry, 7.600 points for execution, and 2.850 points for difficulty.
Ariha’s journey to this historic victory is one of grit, persistence, and a long road of progression in international competitive gymnastics, and the story is one of success. Ariha was born in 2004 in Manipur (a sports-loving state). She grew up with a passion for gymnastics and eventually found her niche in aerobic gymnastics under the guidance of her coach Yumnam Ranjan Singh. As she juggled a rigorous athletic program with an academic career (she studied sports leadership at AISTS India), Ariha was never less than a professional on both the domestic and international level. She was always a professional gymnastics competitor and went from junior to world class and went to the highest level of the FIG and at world-class events (FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships in Guimarães and Pesaro) she went to for years and also competed in the Suzuki World Cup series in Tokyo.
Before winning the gold medal in the Philippines, Ariha came close to continental podiums on multiple occasions. She took fourth place in the individual event at the Asian Championships in 2022 and 2024 and fifth place at the Senior Asian Championships in Hanoi. Instead of downplaying those near-misses, she honed her routines and developed the physical stamina and mental strength to shine on the Asian stage. Her domestic success was the backbone of her career, where she took gold medals at the National Games and the podium (e.g., a bronze at the Asian Cup).
The reverberations of her success were felt immediately throughout the nation. Sudhir Mital, the Gymnastics Federation of India president, beamed at her achievement and also acknowledged both the athlete and her coach for their commitment. And Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also took to Twitter to celebrate the historic achievement and said that Pangambam's success was a pride and victory of the country. Ariha Pangambam is now basking in the glory of her continental gold and so is she for all the future gymnasts to come; she is a model of what determination can achieve and she will never let her dreams go.
