India’s BWF World Championships 2026 event has received a mixed but encouraging draw, with experienced players PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen getting relatively manageable opening round matches, while rising star Ayush Shetty is to face the toughest challenge of the Indian team in the first round against the world champion Shi Yu Qi of China.
The draw has created optimism among Indian badminton fans, especially after national coach Pullela Gopichand said that he is confident in the country's top singles players despite the tough road ahead. Sindhu and Lakshya will have time to get a strong start in the first round and Ayush will be the chief opponent in the first round of the tournament.
PV Sindhu Chases Historic Sixth World Championships Medal
The former world champion PV Sindhu will begin her campaign against Sophia Nobel of Ireland, currently ranked world No. 141. On paper, Sindhu comes out as the strongest player in the event and will be hoping to make a strong start in her quest for a sixth medal at the BWF World Championships.
Sindhu, who won the Japan Open title last month, is confident after her performance. The draw has also been favorable for her since she will be far from some of the tournament’s biggest contenders in the early stages.
Although world No. 1 An Se Young of South Korea is in the same half of the draw, the two of them won’t meet before the latter rounds. Defending champion Akane Yamaguchi is further away from Sindhu until the medal stages of the game.
The Indian ace will now face China’s third seed Wang Zhi Yi in pre-quarterfinals before a potential quarterfinal match-up against Indonesia's Putri Wardani, setting up an exciting path toward another podium finish.
Lakshya Sen Faces Bigger Test After Comfortable Opener
Lakshya Sen will open his tournament against Austria's Collins Valentine Filimon in a match in which the Indian is expected to win.
But the challenge becomes much tougher in the next stage, where Lakshya will meet Thailand's second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the pre-quarterfinals.
Since winning his first World Championships bronze medal in 2021, coach Pullela Gopichand says Lakshya has become a much stronger and more mature player.
Lakshya has gained a lot of experience through winning big international tournaments and now has the confidence and ability to compete with the best in the world, Gopichand said. The coach said a match against Kunlavut would take supreme physical and mental stamina and he hoped India's preparation and the home environment would play a decisive part.
Ayush Shetty Draws Defending Champion Shi Yu Qi
Of all Indian players, Ayush Shetty probably has the most difficult opening-round assignment as he faces defending champion Shi Yu Qi.
While Ayush has lost all three of his previous matches against the Chinese superstar, the young Indian has consistently challenged Shi in recent matches, suggesting the gap between the two has narrowed considerably.
However, Gopichand believes that meeting Shi in the first round could actually benefit Ayush. “An early upset would open up the draw and give the young one the chance to make a run in the tournament,” the Indian coach said.
Gopichand also praised Ayush's aggressive attacking game, stating that the young shuttler possesses the weapons required to trouble even the world's best players if he performs to his potential.
Men's Singles Draw Wide Open
Unlike previous editions that had a few elite players dominating the men's singles field, Gopichand believes the 2026 edition is among the most unpredictable in recent memory.
He noted that several players such as the Popov brothers, Chou Tien Chen, Alvi Farhan, and others have delivered excellent performances throughout the season and hence made the competition much more balanced.
This unpredictability, according to Gopichand, increases the chances for both Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty to challenge for medals if they can produce consistent performances across the tournament.
Satwik-Chirag Receive First-Round Bye
India’s top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty begin their campaign with a first-round bye.
The fifth-seeded duo will meet either Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle or Thailand's Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn and Worrapol Thongsa-Nga in their opening match.
If they advance, a likely clash against Indonesia's Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin, finalists at this year's Indonesia Open, could prove to be their first major test.
Meanwhile, the Indian pair of MR Arjun and Hariharan will start against Ireland’s Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds.
Other Indian Contenders Ready to Start Campaign
In women's singles, young Unnati Hooda opens against Myanmar's Thet Htar Thuzar, with a potential second-round meeting with Canada's Michelle Li.
In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, seeded 15th, also got a first-round bye and are due to meet Chinese sixth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui in the pre-quarterfinals.
Another Indian mixed doubles duo, Rohan Kapoor and G Ruthvika Shivani, will begin against Canada’s Jonathan Lai and Crystal Lai.
In women's doubles, Commonwealth Games bronze medalists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand meet Spain's Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez, while Simran Singhi and Kavipriya Selvam take on Spain's Nikol Carulla and Carmen Jimenez.
India Eyes Strong World Championships Campaign
With experienced campaigners PV Sindhu and Satwik-Chirag leading the charge, along with emerging players Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, and Unnati Hooda, India will go to the BWF World Championships 2026 with realistic medal hopes in various categories.
Although Ayush’s match against the title-holder Shi Yu Qi will be one of the tournament’s biggest opening rounds, Sindhu and Lakshya are also in good position to get things going early. If India’s most talented shuttlers are able to make the most of their draws and keep up with the pace to win the title, the country could again have a memorable campaign on the biggest stage of badminton.
