Bangladesh produced a remarkable upset against world champions Australia in the first ODI of the series, securing an emphatic 86-run victory via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method on Tuesday. The victory gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series and marked only Bangladesh's second-ever ODI win over Australia in 36 years of competition between the two nations.
Bangladesh's first victory over Australia came in Cardiff in 2005, and the latest triumph in Dhaka will be remembered as another historic success for the Tigers.
Shanto and Mosaddek Lead Bangladesh’s Charge
After losing the toss at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh were asked to bat first.
Openers provided a good start with Tanjid Hasan Tamim contributing 54 off 44 balls with seven fours and a six. A steady 67 off 86 deliveries from captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto was also part of the momentum as he hit nine boundaries and a six.
Mosaddek Hossain was the most impressive, playing his first ODI since 2022. The all-rounder achieved 86 in 70 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Towhid Hridoy (31) and Taskin Ahmed (20) contributed to the total.
However, Bangladesh eventually managed 284/8 in their allotted 50 overs.
Nathan Ellis was Australia's pick of the bowlers with 3/38 from 10 overs. Liam Scott and Matt Renshaw took two wickets each, and Xavier Bartlett took one wicket.
Australian Batting Line-Up Crumbles
Chasing 285 for victory, Australia's batting line-up struggled against Bangladesh's disciplined bowling attack.
While many batters got starts, none apart from Cameron Green succeeded in turning them into a match-winning innings. Green remained unbeaten on 52 from 66 balls and scored four boundaries and a six, but didn’t benefit from support from the other end.
Alex Carey scored 47, Cooper Connolly 35, and Josh Inglis 19. The rest of the batting order failed to reach double figures as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Australia were at 191/9 after 42.2 overs when rain interrupted play. Bangladesh were declared winners by 86 runs under the DLS method with conditions preventing any further action.
Nahid Rana Shines With the Ball
The Bangladesh bowling team performed impressively well, led by pace sensation Nahid Rana. The fast bowler took four wickets for 41 runs in his 10-over spell, dismantling Australia's batting line-up and playing an important role in the victory.
Mosaddek Hossain capped off a memorable all-round performance by taking two wickets for 37 runs. Veteran pacer Mustafizur Rahman also impressed with figures of 2/24, and Taskin Ahmed took one wicket.
Historic Win for Bangladesh
The victory is one of Bangladesh’s biggest ODI successes in recent years and reflects the team’s growing confidence against top-ranked opposition. Defeating the world champions has given the Tigers a perfect start to the series and a chance to clinch a rare ODI series win against Australia.
With momentum firmly on their side, Bangladesh will now look to carry it into the remaining matches, while Australia will be eager to bounce back and level the series.
