Chris Lynn's Cocaine Suspension Revealed: Australian T20 Star Served One-Month Ban

Former Australian cricketer Chris Lynn has served a one-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine metabolite in England’s domestic T20 Blast competition in July 2026. The Cricket Regulator made the decision public today, three weeks after Lynn had served his suspension.

The news has been greeted with interest in the cricketing world because Lynn is one of the most successful batters in BBL history.

Chris Lynn Tested Positive During T20 Blast Finals Day

Lynn was playing for Northamptonshire Steelbacks in England's T20 Blast when he was tested on 18 July 2026 as part of a routine anti-doping programme.

The test was played during T20 Blast Finals Day when Northamptonshire won the competition.

His urine sample was sent to a World Anti-Doping Agency accredited laboratory in France. The analysis found an adverse analytical finding for benzoylecgonine (a metabolite of cocaine).

The Cricket Regulator informed Lynn of the positive test on 31 July and provisionally suspended him from professional cricket.

Lynn Admitted Cocaine Use

In disciplinary proceedings Lynn admitted using cocaine between the evening of 15 July and early hours of 16 July 2026.

He said that the substance had been taken outside competition and was unconnected to his cricketing form.

The Cricket Regulator accepted his explanation about timing of use. Cocaine is on the WADA prohibited list as a stimulant and in competition it is prohibited.

The case was dealt with under the England and Wales Cricket Board’s anti-doping rules.

Why Was Chris Lynn's Suspension Reduced?

The Cricket Regulator had considered a three month suspension for the violation but reduced it to one month after Lynn signed up for and completed a substance-of-abuse treatment programme.

The treatment programme ended on August 30, 2026. His suspension period was backdated to July 31 so by the time the decision was announced he had served his full penalty already.

The regulator announced that the suspension was complete and Lynn had accepted it.

Chris Lynn's Cricket Career and BBL Records

Chris Lynn is known for his aggressive batting style and six-hitting ability in T20 cricket.

He has played four One Day Internationals and 18 Twenty20 Internationals for Australia but his biggest successes have come through franchise cricket.

Lynn became a big draw in the Big Bash League playing for Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers. He has the competition's all-time leading run scoring record and is also known for his six-hitting ability.

His experience in franchise competitions has made him a name known all over the world in T20 cricket.

What Happens Next for Chris Lynn?

The disciplinary action comes ahead of the Big Bash League season. Lynn has been linked with a move to Melbourne Renegades but his participation and any further action will be up to the club.

Since he has already served the suspension he is eligible to return to professional cricket under the sanction.

The development is a big blow to the career of an experienced T20 batter but Lynn has gone through the treatment programme and served the penalty imposed by Cricket Regulator.

His future in the Big Bash League will now be monitored as Australian domestic cricket gears up for its next season.
