Sri Lanka produced a thrilling performance to beat England by 16 runs in the second ODI at Headingley, Leeds, on September 24, 2026. Sri Lanka recorded 321/6 in 50 overs to restrict England to 305/9.
The win brought Sri Lanka level at 1-1 in the three-match ODI series with England winning the opening match. The series will now be decided in the third ODI at The Oval on September 27.
Kusal Mendis Leads Sri Lanka’s Batting
Sri Lanka’s great total was built around an outstanding century by captain Kusal Mendis. He hit 121 runs and laid the foundation for a large first-innings total.
Mendis had great support from Kamindu Mendis, who scored 54. The two struck a 137-run partnership to help Sri Lanka recover and put pressure on the England bowling attack.
Sri Lanka continued to score freely in the later stages and finished on 321/6 from their 50 overs.
The total seemed challenging, but England had enough batting strength to make the chase interesting.
England Fight Back in the Chase
England started their chase with a positive intent and kept themselves in the game for much of the innings.
Some England players contributed, and the hosts were still within reach of the target. Jos Buttler also made a contribution, even though he was injured, and England’s middle order continued to hit the Sri Lankan bowlers.
England eventually reached 305/9 after 50 overs and finished just 16 runs short of the target.
Sri Lanka Hold Their Nerve
The final stages were the biggest drama of the match. England had the chance to chase down the target and Sri Lanka needed wickets and disciplined bowling to close the game.
Dunith Wellalage was a key wicket-taker with the ball and took three wickets. Eshan Malinga and Dilshan Madushanka took two wickets each.
Sri Lanka managed to keep England from getting the boundaries needed in the closing overs. Despite England’s hard chase, the hosts could not reach the 322-run target.
Series Level at 1-1
Sri Lanka’s 16-run victory completely changed the series situation. England had won the first ODI by 89 runs but Sri Lanka responded strongly at Headingley.
The second ODI also saw much closer contests, with both teams crossing the 300-run mark.
Sri Lanka will now have confidence in their batting ability and the ability to defend a big total. England will have to regroup before the series final.
The third ODI will be played at The Oval on September 27, with the series tied 1-1.
