England finished the tournament with a win but it wasn’t good enough for them to make the final. Sri Lanka and Pakistan were still the two teams in contention for the title.

Ben Duckett Leads England's Batting Attack

After Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field England took advantage of the batting conditions. Openers Ben Duckett and Tom Banton got England off to an excellent start putting pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers from the first ball.

Banton made 74 off 75 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Duckett was the star of the show with an outstanding knock of 167 runs off just 132 balls — he hit 24 boundaries in his innings and laid a strong foundation for England’s run chase.

The opening stand added 163 before Banton was dismissed. Captain Harry Brook made 44 runs and Will Jacks scored 30. Jordan Cox made an early 43 and Sam Curran remained unbeaten on 21.

England eventually finished on 386/5 in their 50 overs but Sri Lanka were given a difficult target of 387 runs.

Sri Lanka Fight Back Through Rathnayake and Mendis

Sri Lanka needed a good batting performance to chase down the target but England took wickets and kept the required run rate under pressure.

Pavan Rathnayake was in fine form with 118 from 77 balls. He played aggressive strokes and gave Sri Lanka hope of completing the chase.

Kusal Mendis also chipped in with 89 runs. The pair kept Sri Lanka in the game for most of the innings.

However England kept finding breakthroughs at key moments. Sri Lanka’s middle and lower order could not sustain the momentum and eventually were bowled out for 331 in 45.1 overs.

Liam Dawson's Four Wickets Seal England's Victory

Liam Dawson was one of England's best bowlers, finishing with 4 wickets for 49 runs off 10 overs. His spell stopped Sri Lanka's chase.

Sonny Baker and Sam Curran also took wickets as England won by 55 runs.

Ben Duckett’s century was Player of the Match.

England Finish with a Consolation Win

Victory gave England a good ending to a difficult campaign — they had lost three games in a row earlier on in the tournament and already had missed out on qualification for the final.

Rathnayake and Mendis had put in individual good performances for Sri Lanka but the defeat came despite that. The batting effort was promising but England’s big first innings total was too much to overcome.

Overall it showed England’s batting strength (Duckett in particular) but also exposed some weaknesses in their bowling. England will take positives from this into the next assignments.
