Haaland scored twice in the second half as Manchester City earned a hard-fought win in a tense and physical encounter. City didn’t play the smooth attacking football they are so good at but Haaland’s clinical finishing was what won it for them.
It became a close game with both teams going toe-to-toe for possession and control. Manchester City couldn’t find their rhythm but their opponents were organised and aggressive in the early stages of the game.
City’s passing was often broken up and opportunities few and far between as the opposition dug in. The fluency wasn’t there in the final third where City create chances at will.
City Find Another Gear in the Second Half
Manchester City upped the pressure after the break as well. Their attacking movement was more purposeful; forcing opposition deeper and allowing more space around the penalty area.
Haaland was the linchpin of that improvement. The Norwegian striker continued to play intelligently and remained a constant threat inside the box; when his chances did come he showed the composure and finishing ability that have made him one of football’s most prolific goalscorers.
His first goal gave City the breakthrough they had been looking for. The goal gave Guardiola’s side confidence and made them take more risks against the opposition.
Haaland then scored again to increase Manchester City’s lead. That second goal effectively put the result beyond doubt and showed what a world-class striker can do when he decides games.
Manchester City Show Winning Mentality
It lacked the elegance and control that Manchester City are at their best but there was another important quality in the victory too: resilience.
Long seasons are often decided by a team’s ability to collect points even when performances aren’t perfect. City coped with a difficult physical battle, stayed disciplined and took advantage of opportunities that came their way.
Guardiola will probably be happy with the result but will know City are not at their best yet. More attacking fluency and sharper passing is needed against stronger opponents.
For Haaland, however, it was another reminder of how important he is to the team. Two goals turned what had been a difficult contest into valuable victory.
