India and Afghanistan will begin their three-match T20I series on September 13, 2026, in New Delhi, but the series has a lot more than immediate impact.
With the 2026 Asian Games in Japan in mind, India will use the Afghanistan series as an important preparation phase for their title defence. The Asian Games men's T20 competition starts with the quarter-finals on September 28, so India has just a few days to choose their combinations and who should be in their XI.
The first T20I will therefore be much more than winning the opening match. India's team management will be looking for answers regarding player roles, batting combinations, bowling options and the balance required for a major multi-nation tournament.
Shreyas Iyer's India has several questions to answer.
Shreyas Iyer will lead India in the series, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain. The Afghanistan games will give Iyer and the team management an opportunity to establish a clear T20 structure before the Asian Games.
India has many players competing for places. Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar give the team multiple combinations.
The challenge will be how these players fit together.
The selectors have already shown their intention to give the squad considerable experience, with Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy getting fitness clearance before the series.
Bumrah's return is a major positive
One of the biggest talking points ahead of the series is Jasprit Bumrah’s return.
Bumrah participated in India’s full squad training session and bowled in practice, an encouraging step ahead of the Afghanistan matches.
His presence could be of real importance for India in the Asian Games. The Afghanistan series allows management to assess his workload and decide how to use him in T20 cricket.
The team will also have to assess its options on the other end, especially with Arshdeep Singh and the replacement of injured pacer Harshit Rana.
Harshit Rana's injury changes India's plans
India suffered a setback when Harshit Rana was ruled out of both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games due to a fresh hamstring injury.
Yash Thakur is named as the replacement. Thakur already has some international T20 experience after making his debut during India's Zimbabwe tour.
That makes the Afghanistan series even more valuable for India's bowling plans. The team will have to select who will be able to provide reliable support for Bumrah and Arshdeep.
Afghanistan provide the perfect test
Afghanistan are unlikely to make India’s preparation easy.
Led by Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan possess one of the strongest spin attacks in T20 cricket. Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi and Nangeyalia Kharote provide a variety of spin options.
That makes Afghanistan an ideal opponent for India before a tournament where adapting to different situations is of paramount importance.
India’s batters will have the opportunity to test themselves against high-quality spin and the bowlers will encounter dangerous hitters like Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sediqullah Atal.
Ishan Kishan and young players in focus
The series could also provide opportunities for players fighting for important roles.
Ishan Kishan comes to the contest after strong domestic performances and needs only 10 T20I runs to go past Dhoni's 1,617 runs for India in the format.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is another young player in the squad. India wants to expose young talent to international cricket before a big tournament.
More than just three matches
The three Afghanistan T20Is will be followed by a one-off T20I against Japan on September 22, giving India another chance to fine-tune their plans before the Asian Games.
That makes the Afghanistan series the first major phase of India's tournament preparation.
The focus will be on finding the right combination rather than just getting wins. The management will want to know who can handle pressure, which batting order works best and how the bowling attack should be structured.

What to expect
The first T20I should be viewed as the beginning of India's Asian Games preparation.
India will want competitive cricket, but the bigger goal will be to settle combinations and make sure that key players get some real game time. Afghanistan's quality spin attack will be a tough test and India’s returning stars and emerging players will have an opportunity to make their claims.
With the Asian Games only weeks away, every match and every individual performance could influence India’s final tournament plans.
