Ishan Kishan produced one of the best performances of his domestic career in the Duleep Trophy final, smashing a remarkable 270 to put East Zone firmly in control against South Zone. East Zone captain led from the front as his team piled up a mammoth 708, leaving South Zone with a daunting task in the rest of the game.
Kishan came in at No. 5 and turned the final into a personal display of stroke-making and endurance. His 270-run innings contained 30 fours and seven sixes, and demonstrated the aggressive nature of his batting. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter was frequently out to the boundary and also formed crucial partnerships to keep East Zone in control of the game.
One of the most important stands was with Kumar Kushagra. The two added 230 runs for the fifth wicket, frustrating the South Zone bowling attack and taking the game further away from their opponents. Kishan’s ability to remain in the game long into the innings allowed East Zone to score 700 runs and establish a massive first-innings total.
Aakash Chopra, former India opener, was quick to praise Kishan's great performance. Chopra said the knock was a great performance and it was important in the final and he talked about it on his YouTube channel.
According to Chopra, the match is now heavily tilted in East Zone's favour because the first-innings lead becomes crucial if the match ends in a draw. In domestic first-class cricket, if the final is drawn, the team with the first-innings lead is declared the winner. With East Zone already posting 708, South Zone must respond with a similar total.
It was even more difficult for South Zone when they lost an early wicket on the third day. Ricky Bhui was also dismissed during the first session, adding to the pressure on a batting line-up that has to now try to score a big score just to keep their title hopes alive.
South Zone has three days of play left so they have the chance to re-enter the competition. But East Zone's vast number means they will have a lot of advantages. If South Zone fail to match or exceed the first-innings score then East Zone will be very strong at winning the trophy. East Zone could also be able to hit again later in the match, depending on the remainder of the match.
For Kishan the innings could matter beyond the Duleep Trophy final. The 270 has arrived when the batter is trying to rebuild his case for a return to the Indian Test setup. Kishan made his Test debut in India's 2023 series against the West Indies, playing in both games in the Caribbean.
His Test debut campaign brought 78 runs, but his international career went through a difficult phase. Kishan left India's tour of South Africa and returned home before the Test series and his domestic cricket also came under discussion.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India subsequently dropped him from its central contract list because of his absence from domestic cricket. Kishan made a return to domestic cricket in 2024-25 and has since then been trying to re-establish himself in all formats.
That is why his Duleep Trophy performance could be a big win for the selectors. With Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel now among India's wicketkeeping options, Kishan is facing a lot of competition for a place in the Test side. But a 270 from a big domestic final is a reminder that he can be a big score with pressure on his shoulders.
If Kishan continues to produce performances of this magnitude, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will have a lot to consider. One innings is not enough to get an international recall but his career in domestic cricket and his ability to contribute with the bat will only help to strengthen his case.

His gigantic 270 has already put his side in a commanding position, and South Zone have been left with a huge first-innings challenge. As Chopra pointed out, the battle for the first-innings lead could ultimately decide the destination of the Duleep Trophy, so Kishan’s magical innings could prove crucial in the title race.
