English international striker Ivan Toney has been formally charged after the police investigation into an incident at a London club. The player was found to have been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm at a club at Wardour Street in the bright and lively Soho district on December 6, sources said. The player has been formally summoned to Westminster Magistrates’ Court later this year on September 24 to make his first court appearance, his legal representatives say.
This new legal challenge comes at the end of a very busy summer for Toney in both domestic and international circles. The three-time England national team player made it to the main event of the FIFA World Cup 2026 when he was part of the team and made two good substitute appearances in the high-stakes semi-final match against Argentina, and was key to the third place playoff win against France.
Toney is a late bloomer in his football career, and it has been a long journey. He started out at his local club Northampton Town before moving to the top flight with Newcastle United in 2015. He had already gained so much experience on loan and some good experience in lower leagues (Peterborough United for example) and he achieved the best in the league with Brentford. He was a real star for Brentford and was able to take them up and up and he became a star for England in 2023 - he was a substitute in the match against Ukraine.
At club level, the prolific forward moves overseas to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ahli, a club he joined after an enormous multi-million-pound move from Brentford. Toney had a very successful season overseas in which he scored 42 goals in all competitions, helping Al-Ahli to a very good third place finish in the league, so he'll be a key figure for the club when they open their season against Diriyah Club next September. As the courts get closer to a hearing in autumn, sports pundits will be following his off-pitch career as well as his professional sport.
