France’s skipper Kylian Mbappe did not make excuses for the team’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final. He argued that France didn’t really make a strong play at that point.
Spain were the better team from the opening whistle at Dallas Stadium, controlling possession, dominating midfield and shutting down France’s attacking threats. Mbappe acknowledged that reality after the final whistle, saying Les Bleus never managed to execute their game plan.
Mbappe said: “I don’t think we played the match we wanted to play -- tactically, technically or for the sake of our overall performance. And when you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.
'Spain Controlled the Match'
France had hoped to disrupt Spain’s rhythm by pressing high up the pitch, but things quickly went wrong.
Mbappe said that Spain’s composure on the ball made it almost impossible for France to impose themselves.
"Our plan was to push them high and stop them from settling into their rhythm because they’re better than us when it comes to controlling the game. But we couldn’t do that."
As Spain calmly played through France’s press, the defending runners-up were chasing the game for long periods.
'We Were Outnumbered'
Mbappe cited the midfield battle as one of the main reasons behind France’s defeat.
In midfield we were outnumbered three to two. Against a team like Spain that’s a huge problem. Our touches, our movement… they just weren’t at the level you need for a World Cup semi-final.
Spain’s technical quality and disciplined passing left France frustrated throughout the night and the likes of Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Pedro Porro took control over the tempo.
A Painful End to a Dream
That defeat ended France's hopes of getting another World Cup final, and Mbappe admitted the disappointment was difficult to put into words.
"Our dream was to make it to the final, to keep our country dreaming and to make history."
Even with the heartbreak, the France captain said the team should take responsibility.
"When you win, you have to go on with your head held high. The same goes for losing. Right now there is so much disappointment. It’s hard to describe how the squad feels."
Time to Move Forward
And Mbappe, who scored eight goals in the tournament, said players would need time to mentally recover before turning their attention to the future.
"Football waits for no one. We have to pick ourselves up, go on holiday and start again. We need to get over this disappointment, learn from it and come back stronger."
France will now play in the third-place playoff, while Spain will prepare for the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against England or Argentina.
For Mbappe and France, the defeat will sting for a long time. But there’s no excuse from the captain’s words, for there are so many lessons learned and so many opportunities for others to learn and to go back and learn about football’s biggest prize again.
