Bruno Fernandes was instrumental in Manchester United coming from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 in the Premier League 2026-27 season as the Portuguese midfielder scored a hat-trick that got Michael Carrick’s team to a crucial victory in their first match since the surprise defeat against Hull City in their previous match.
Manchester United was under pressure after the disappointing performance from last weekend. The team had been down on the morning of the game and Ipswich took the lead in the first half of the match as the disappointment of a poor performance against Hull City made the mood even more tense when Ipswich took the lead.
Ipswich Town put on a good start and were rewarded for their attacking approach in the 24th minute. Leif Davis found the back of the net to give the visitors an unexpected advantage, leaving Manchester United with plenty to do.
The home side slowly began to take control of the game and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Fernandes was once again the key to United winning and scored five minutes before halftime to bring his team level.
The goal changed the momentum of the game so much that Manchester United had a fresh sense of confidence going into the second half. Carrick’s side returned to the pitch with the score at the break to complete the comeback and put the team up 1-0.
United took the lead 10 minutes after the restart when Harry Maguire's header ended up in the net after going in off Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves. Manchester United had a 2-1 lead and Ipswich were under pressure.
Fernandes then extended United's lead from the penalty spot. The midfielder showed composure to score his second goal of the evening and put the hosts in a commanding position.
The Portugal international was not done yet. Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute and produced a second important goal in what was a dominant performance from Manchester United. His three goals saw United recover from their initial disappointment to take control of the game so well.
Bryan Mbeumo added Manchester United's fifth goal with eight minutes left. The goal also added to the home side's attacking power as Ipswich struggled to contain United in the final stages.
Ipswich managed to score a second goal in stoppage time with Chuba Akpom, but it was too late to affect the result. Manchester United eventually won a convincing 5-2 victory and Fernandes was the man of the match in terms of performance and was most clearly the star.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Chelsea made their second win of the season after beating Brighton 4-3 in an action-packed match. Chelsea were able to take off quickly with Romeo Lavia and Pedro Neto scoring in the first 15 minutes.
Joao Pedro added Chelsea’s third goal in the 32nd minute and the home side benefited from a comfortable cushion. Brighton refused to give up and fought their way back into the game.
Malick Yalcouye pulled one goal back for Brighton, while an own goal by Joao Pedro reduced the deficit even further. Cole Palmer scored Chelsea's fourth goal in the 74th minute, seemingly putting the points in their hands.
Brighton scored again through Pascal Gross deep into stoppage time, but they could not find another equaliser. Chelsea held on for a narrow but entertaining victory.
Leeds United and Brentford played out a draw, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring to cancel out Kevin Schade's first-half goal. Sunderland also won their first match of the season after Wilson Isidor’s 75th-minute goal secured a win against Fulham.
There was also lots of drama from the other results. Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest, while Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat at home against Newcastle United. Hull City continued their good start with a 1-0 win in Coventry City, and Everton and Bournemouth shared the points in a 1-1 draw.
Manchester City also had a good result, with Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki scoring twice each in a 4-1 victory away to Crystal Palace.
Next up, it will be the next big match between the top two: champions Arsenal and Aston Villa. Given the Premier League 2026-27 season is still full of surprises, Fernandes' hat-trick and Manchester United's comeback victory against Ipswich will prove to be one of the best performances of this weekend.
