A terrific fielding act of Shreyas Iyer is the most remarkable game of cricket seen in this year’s IPL during the match between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. It was already known for being one of the best catches in IPL history, and it took place during the 24th match of the season.
It emerged after Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya unleashed a punchy shot that had the potential to blow up into a six. Shreyas Iyer showed great athleticism and awareness near the edge. He jumped and caught the ball in the air, but fast realized that he was sending it the other way from the edge.
Iyer let the ball go flying into the air, throwing it back onto the field before stepping over the rope. His teammate Xavier Bartlett (close by) easily got the catch. The whole affair unfolded in seconds, as players on both teams were so stunned by that the crowd at Wankhede erupted into applause.
And the brilliance of the catch was not just sheer athleticism, the way as many a coach has discovered. It was his execution and accuracy. It was Iyer's play that impressed the masses. The determination to run the ball from where it went, a way to keep balance close (and near the boundary) and coordination of his teammates in each run demonstrated that his playing ability goes well beyond mere contact. One of those singled out was Sachin Tendulkar, the cricket great, who wrote to praise the effort on social media.
SHREYAS IYER….. YOU ABSOLUTELY FREAK. 🤯

Tendulkar said it was his personal best and described it as one of the best catches he has ever witnessed in real life, pointing out the awareness and craft it takes to hit it the way he did. Iyer had to know the speed and altitude of the ball, then track the boundary line, and, his partner, Tendulkar recalled in his response, ‘all in flying height,’ he told us.
What made Shreyas Iyer’s catch so special was not just the athleticism, but the awareness behind it.

He had to judge the speed of the ball, the height, where the boundary rope was, how close he was to stepping on it, and get his jump absolutely perfect.
Then, while still in the…
He credited Iyer’s fitness and quick reflexes to the extraordinary effort he put in. Athletic and fast thinkers are a large part of the sport these days, and these moments demonstrate the development of our fielding in contemporary cricket, where physical capabilities matter more than agility.
Batting and bowling (and all other team plays generally) are some of the headline-grabbing topics of discussion, but when the players on the pitch put a perfect display of fielding in place like this, it should remind all of us that things like that should matter equally in game play. As the sporting beast with loads of energy as an industry, IPL is a genre of unforgettable experiences, and Iyer’s is undoubtedly one of 2026’s most glamorous! That fans are partying it up keeps players like Shreyas Iyer ranked among the most agile cricketers in the league.
