Sir Vivian Richards, West Indies batsman, has backed England star Joe Root to break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Test run-scoring record, but his assessment was made cheeky with a reference to another England great, Geoffrey Boycott.
Richards believes Root has the ability and longevity to surpass Tendulkar’s remarkable 15,921 Test runs. Root recently became only the second player in Test history to cross the 14,000-run mark, which is a long way from the Indian icon’s record.

Richards’ prediction was even more entertaining when the discussion turned to Boycott, another legendary Yorkshire batter.
Richards pointed out in Test Match Special that Root overcoming Tendulkar would also send a message to Boycott about who should be perceived as Yorkshire’s finest batter.
The playful remark added another layer to the debate about Root's extraordinary career. Boycott has long been one of the great figures in English cricket and is associated with Yorkshire cricket.
The exchange was certainly funny and Richards used that comparison to demonstrate how remarkable Root’s achievements have been.
Root Still Has Ground to Cover
Root is already England’s leading Test run-scorer and one of the most prolific batters in international cricket.
But Tendulkar’s record is still a formidable one. The former captain of India has 15,921 Test runs in 200 matches and 24 years.
Root, who made his Test debut in 2012, has more than 14,000 runs. Reports put him at 14,216 runs and he is about 1,705 runs short of Tendulkar's mark.
Recent Form Adds an Interesting Twist
Root’s pursuit of Tendulkar’s record is still an effort despite a difficult recent period with the bat.
England’s batter has had a worrying run of dismissals to leg before wicket. He was lbw again in England’s ongoing Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston and continued a worrying sequence.
But Root is confident in solving the problem because he's experienced and has the ability to adapt, he said that after almost 15 years working at the highest level.

Root Moves Up the Test Appearance List
Root’s longevity was also highlighted when he played his 169th Test and moved beyond Australia's Steve Waugh in the list of the most Test appearances.
Even among the top names in this list, only Tendulkar with 200 Tests and James Anderson with 188 have played more Test matches than Root.
The longevity is crucial if Root wants to catch Tendulkar. The Englishman will need to keep his fitness and productivity for many more years.
Can Root Actually Break Tendulkar's Record?
The numbers suggest that the challenge is substantial but not impossible.
Root still needs around 1,700 more runs to go beyond Tendulkar. If he keeps pace with career-level consistency and plays Test cricket regularly, the opportunity remains open.
Tendulkar’s record still stands as one of the toughest in cricket.
Richards’ endorsement is just another sign that Root’s belief is growing that he would eventually rewrite the record books.
