Shapoor Zadran, one of the pioneers of Afghan cricket's rise on the international stage, died on July 7, 2026, at the age of 38 after a long battle with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life-threatening immune system disorder.
Zadran had been in intensive treatment at the Delhi-NCR hospital since January. The former left-arm pacer was still suffering from the illness after months of treatment, leaving cricket in grief.
His death was confirmed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in a statement on his death and remembered him as one of the architects of Afghanistan’s remarkable cricket journey from an Associate nation to a respected force in international cricket.
"Shapoor Zadran is one of the pioneers who formed Afghanistan cricket. His contribution to the team's rise on the global stage will never be forgotten," the board said.
A Pioneer in Afghanistan Cricket
Zadran was instrumental in one of Afghanistan's most dynamic periods in cricket. He was a fiery fast bowler who had been one of the most dependable fast bowlers ever to make his international debut in 2009.
Zadran represented Afghanistan in 80 international matches in a career that began more than a decade ago until 2020.
He took 43 wickets in 44 ODIs and 37 wickets in 36 T20s. His ability to make breakthroughs in crucial moments made him a key member of Afghanistan’s pace attack during the team's early years.

Zadran is best remembered for his part in Afghanistan’s historic victory over Scotland at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
