India’s cricket leadership will head for a crucial review meeting on September 3, with Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill and T20I captain Shreyas Iyer expected to attend. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman will all be present in person as the team looks at the recent white-ball performances and plans for a busy international calendar.
After a tough tour to the UK, India was unable to win a single match in their seven-match T20I campaign and subsequently lost the three-match ODI series against England 1-2. But the team management and selection committee has decided that the team needs to address the areas where we need to work before India enters the next stage of international cricket.
Gill is expected to have a role to play in the review. The batter has become more involved in the team’s direction since taking over as India’s Test captain in May 2025 and ODI captain in October 2025. Gill may be talking to the group after the meeting to say how England and Ireland went and how they can improve on this and plan for the future.
Shreyas Iyer will also be present as he leads India in T20Is. The meeting would cover the balance of the squad across formats, performances of the players in individual roles and the team’s plans for the next big international events. As the white ball calendar becomes ever more important, the leadership group will need to appraise combinations and select players who can deliver consistently.
One of the biggest talking points during the meeting might be the future of former India captain Rohit Sharma. The veteran batter's international career has been under the microscope since it was suggested in July that he may be removed from India’s ODI plans after the third match against England at Lord’s.
Rohit, however, responded with a century in that match. His performance has only added to the debate over his place in the Indian ODI structure. His future is believed to be a topic of differing opinions within the BCCI and selectors, making the review meeting important. Gill and the rest of the team management will need to have some kind of view on how Rohit will play in the future.
The meeting is also expected to address India’s upcoming all-format tour of New Zealand. The series will start on 22 October with a five-match T20I series followed by five ODIs and two Tests. The lengthy tour will enable India to address some of the problems that emerged during the England campaign while also dealing with the bigger issues ahead.
The two-Test series against New Zealand will be of particular importance for the WTC 2027 cycle. India will need the Tests to produce good results to remain in the race to qualify for the WTC 2027 final. So workload management, player availability, combinations and long-term planning will be important topics for discussions.
Gill could use the meeting to flesh out his vision for India's ODI and Test teams and to contribute to the planning process. With Gambhir and Agarkar to take part in the review and senior players such as Laxman to be considered, the review will be a good opportunity to have the decision-makers in India's cricketing structure in one place.
The BCCI review meeting is therefore at a key moment for Indian cricket. The focus in the immediate future will be on the reasons for what went wrong in the recent white-ball games but the discussion is likely to extend beyond those results. In the longer term, the future of senior players, leadership combinations, team selection and preparations for the New Zealand tour will determine the strategy for the next few months of India’s cricket.
